Yes you can use it without other NI instruments. It has its own DAW called Machine and workflow. Also you can use it as a plugin in fl studio. It can also be used as a midi controller. Personally I think it's a bit complex if you use it as a plugin in other DAWs as it takes time to route the signal from its own track into your inputs.
