The consistency of the sauce is thicker than water but not as thick as a heavy stew. The food actually tastes pretty good (yes, I tasted it out of curiosity) even if it is unseasoned. I believe getting him off the high carb is going to help his weight loss. Talk to a vet about how much to feed each day since it depends on caloric content of the food you're feeding. Total calories vary with each variety of canned food and you can find the total calories per can by checking the label for kcal/can.
