It is all meant to work together to keep the good bacteria and limit/stop the bad. Without the UV it's just a great filter system. **Q: How tall does the fountain part get? I mean, how far below the water can the pump be for the fountain nozzle to reach the top of the water?** A: About 23" or so. I have this pump in a 125 gallon pre form pond. It comes with sections that you put together to customize the height. **Q: what do I need to go with this....any tubing?** A: Bought 6 mos ago and still goin strong.
