replacement for a rena filstar
I bought this filter to replace a fairly new, IN WARRANTY Filstar xps. I have been a loyal Rena customer for over 10 years and have used their canister filters on my fish tanks. I recently set my daughter up with a turtle tank and got the xps for it. These types of filters aren't made for low water level applications, I realize this. This one had issues from the start. It would run along and then cavitate. I can accept any issues due to me using it for applications in which it wasn't designed. To make a long story short, a plastic part was broken on the top. I went back and forth a couple of times and finally talked to someone on the phone, they said I would have to send the part back before they could send me out a new one (I was using the top off of one of my other filters in the mean time as they are all interchangeable, and upon further inspection, it was cracked as well, just not leaking yet. That filter was also in warranty). I couldn't do without two filters. I asked if they could send me the parts and then I could send back the broken ones, and their reply was they can't send out high end parts unless they get the broken ones first, and that my only option was to buy the replacement parts myself, even though my filters were in warranty. The guy I talked didn't seem to worry about losing a long time customer, so time to try someone else.I love the Fluval filter. The only feature I couldn't get to work was the self prime function but this is probably due to my low water level being below the recommended 7 inch level from the top of the tank. when I first got it going the water output was low, so I moved the filter around a bit to work out the bubbles. As it ran the water output increased. There are several features of this filter that I like. The adjustable water flow and the ball check in the intake tube are great additions. The overall quality seems better to me. They only thing I wish that was on there would be a sight glass of some type to see the water flow in the filter and see if there are any air bubbles. The filter and hoses are opaque so you can't see the water movement. I've not heard it cavitate at all, and it's super quiet. with the filstar the water seemed to have a sheen on top of it, but with the fluval, the water is crystal clear. Looks like they have a new future customer.

Only good if you can prime it
It is one tough filter to prime but once its primed it works good. I sold mine because I was tired of getting blisters on my fingers from trying to prime it. Priming will break a good sweat. The 106 is much better

Effective filtration, questionable gasket and materials..
I have this setup on my 10 gallon freshwater dwarf frog/ betta tank. It appears to be doing a great job so far, but the plastic feels like its made out of solo cups that were salvaged from trashcans. But, for the moment, it appears to be doing a good job at filtering the water. I have added fluval ammonia remover media to mine aswell as carbon and ceramic bio media. As with any canister, make sure you realize the current of this filter will be quite strong, and you will need to buy fish that prefer strong currents. Fluval made a flow adjustment valve on this filter, but don't get too excited, because you can only turn it down 50% of the way before you burn out your motor prematurely. But then again, if your going to run the canister at <50%, you should probably not buy it at all in that case. Also, make sure you measure properly before cutting, as you have JUST enough hose to make it work, and replacement hose is $$.Flow issues aside, I think they could have done a better job preventing bypass. But for a beginning level hobbyist, this should fit the bill just fine.

Great filter
Great filter. This is an older smaller model for use with about 25 gallon tank but got it because if its price and I did not like to get a hanging one or sump type below. Used for my salt aquarium setup. Wisper quiet operation. You have medium choices to place in the baskets. Easy to install. You may want to modify it by adding extra spongy filter material or gauze of some sort to block water bypass on top. Other than this minor issue it does its job.

Amazing canister filter!
About 10 years ago I was researching filters for my turtle tank because it was too difficult to do water changes with the bigger tank I bought for her (30 gal). All the reviews I read said that the Fluval x04 series filters were the best out there so I put down the money for a 104 model and never looked back. I had the Fluval 104 filter for about 10 years before the motor finally gave up last week, waaaay beyond the 3yr warranty that came with it.To be fair, the 104 was the first canister filter I had ever purchased but I was so happy with it that when it finally died, I immediately replaced it with this newer 105 model. It's super quiet, and easy to setup with the detailed instructions. The best part is how easy it is to clean, just close the aquastop system and take the filter with you to clean where it's convenient. I know this sounds like a commercial but I really love this filter; this is the first review I've ever written just because I'm that happy with it. Hopefully this one will last another 10 years at which point I'll buy another one. FYI: The tank is a 30 gal filled 2/3 with water and houses my 6" painted turtle and the occasional fish and I only clean the filter about twice a year as needed.

Very quiet, Compact, Easy to set up.
It took awhile to set up, but well worth the time. It comes with a dvd that teaches you how to set it up along with alot of manuals. As for noise, I don't hear a thing (in my bottom compartment of my stand). It got my tank to "crystal clear water" status within a few hours. This is set up on my Fluval Flora btw, it works great when you turn down the flow rate. Love this filter, and would recommend it to everyone with an aquarium size of 25 gallons and under.
