So when I heard that he had another out, I ordered it immediately. I was not disappointed by this one.The storyline is set up by going into current times and introducing some professor character and others, PLEASE CONTINUE TO READ PAST THAT FIRST INTRO CHAPTER! Really, I couldn't care less about those characters and they are not in any way central to the book. They were a vessel solely for the introduction of the main storyline and you can tell that right off the bat. I skimmed through those parts (a total of maybe 30 pages in the WHOLE book) to keep getting back to the paleolithic era storyline. A lot of good came out of that book.PROS: A good grasp of human emotions, relatable, characters of both genders that could be strong, or weak, or scared... REALISTIC. Some individual "bad" characters that you loved to hate. Decent fictional cultures or differences in tribes throughout the story. Touching, and I felt invested in the story.CONS: A nasty tribe of people called "the cohort" - but other than the name and that they're "bad" we didn't know anything about these people. So, as a whole tribe, not a very fleshed-out antagonist. (would love to see more of them, maybe based on the warrior-culture of the Apache tribe?) Again, the intro and "current day" storyline was bland, but that was hardly part of the book.* PG-16: There was a surprising amount of sex, sexuality, arousal, etc in this book. FOR ME it did not detract from the storyline, but it depends on personal tastes. Words like "mating" or "his member" are usually used but "penis" is used at least once. It is really a parent or individual's call on whether that is appropriate for different ages. Just thought everyone should get that heads up! I hope they make a School-safe version of this book for classrooms.At the end of the book, it definitely seems to me like a sequel is planned. Move over Moby Dick and Call of the Wild, there's a new classic in town. I understand many of you will think this is quite the stretch, but I'm very serious in saying this book is destined to be among the classics. W. Bruce Cameron (quickly becoming a favorite author, in fact I think he's already there) has written a brilliant novel in "The Dog Master." It is hard for me to begin to even describe the experience of reading this book; I just want the whole world to read it! It is the fantastic story of the first dog, the relationship to man, and how the whole love story started over 30,000 years ago. The "Wolfen" are a "creed" who follow the wolf, worship the wolf, study the wolf, and follow the wolf so the pack will lead them to food. The "Kindred" are a creed who live by "the hunt" and struggle to survive; the men and women of this creed are so well written you love some and really, really hate some others. The "Cohorts" are the mean guys; the 2 creeds don't want to "mess with these dudes" but, you know they will have to eventually. The story moves back and forth between different years (summers as the Kindred call them) and the lives of the 2 different creeds throughout these years. Wonderful, rich characters exist in both; you find yourself totally caring about them and running back to the book to see what happens next, it is a page turner. I say picture little pieces of Clan of the Cave Bear, Watership Down, Old Yeller, Where the Red Fern Grows, Follow the River, The Red Tent, The Yearling, The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, Dances with Wolves (just to name a few) and you have "The Dog Master" ~ a masterpiece. I urge each person reading this to get a copy of this book because I can't put into words or describe the journey; it's unforgettable. W.
