Yes you can, it's quite close, but it plays fine with the lid down.

If you open the lid, then put the LP in at the correct angle it is fine. (When putting the LP in, lower the back of the LP first in the gap of the lid, then lower the rest of it). It becomes 2nd nature once you do it once.
