The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Validates products for Government use that meet their criteria. Apricorn products that have the letter F imbedded in them have been Validated by NIST. The products that don't have an F imbedded in them use the same encryption chips but they haven't been reviewed by NIST. **Q: I work with data very few people can see. I would rather lose the data than have it retrievable by Aegis, can the back door be locked?** A: Hello Craig from Apricorn, cchristensensen@apricorn.com There is no backdoor on these products. The data is protected by 256-bit AES-XTS encryption. The drive itself creates the encryption key that it generates through its own random generator. The drive is the only thing / place where the key is (stored encrypted) and without the key, you can't get to the data. If the drive is lost or stolen and it will wipe the encryption key if it detects a brute force attack rendering the data on it useless. **Q: Will it backup automatically considering it has a keypad to access?** A: It can be used with backups provided that you're computer does not put your USB into power saving. I use mine for the express purpose of backups to help protect them from theft. However, if USB loses power, then the code will need to be re-entered. This is particularly of concern on people that have laptops or tablets with power saving features such as a surface. We had issues with the surface devices but this was corrected by a registry key adjustment to ensure that the USB ports aren't powered down when idle. **Q: What happens if someone cuts the USB cord?** A: Pretty much the same as if you cut the cord to any electrical device. It won't work. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very good *by J***U on 6 December 2021* No issue at all until now. Very good and happy. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Trusted Brand, Solid Performance, and Easy Setup *by J***H on 25 April 2026* This is a solid product from a great company. I’ve dealt directly with them before, and they stand behind their products. I own several of their devices, and they’ve all been reliable. This drive is a good size and easy to configure. I do recommend reading through all the setup steps first, then going back and following them as you go, since some steps are timed. The drive has a convenient spot to store the USB 3.0 cable and comes with a nice carry case. It also includes an extra cable that isn’t clearly labeled—this is for providing additional power if you’re using an older computer or a low-power USB hub. I haven’t needed to use it, even across multiple computers. Transfer speeds have been good, and overall performance has been very solid. If you need portable hardware-encrypted storage, this is definitely a great option. The company also offers other secure solutions if you need more features. Highly recommended. ## Frequently Bought Together - Apricorn 2TB Aegis Padlock USB 3.0 256-Bit AES XTS Hardware Encrypted Portable External Hard Drive (A25-3PL256-2000) - Apricorn Aegis Secure Key 3 NX 128GB 256-Bit Encrypted FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Validated Secure USB 3.0 Flash Drive, ASK3-NX-128GB, black - Apricorn 128GB Aegis Secure Key 3 NXC 256-Bit Hardware-Encrypted USB 3.2 Type C Flash Drive, FIPS 140-3 Level 3 Validated (ASK3-NXC-128GB), Black --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.com.pa/products/297518091-apricorn-aegis-padlock-2-tb-usb-3-0-256-bit](https://www.desertcart.com.pa/products/297518091-apricorn-aegis-padlock-2-tb-usb-3-0-256-bit) --- *Product available on Desertcart Panama* *Store origin: PA* *Last updated: 2026-10-18*
