Is this heat resistant? I have a metal butter dish and if I put it on top of the oven, all the butter inside melts

No, it is not heat resistant. And as you have already discovered, neither is butter, so we recommend you keep both off a hot stove ;)

Does the lid snap in place? Or does it just sit on top of the bottom?

It just sits. There is a groove on either end, between the handle and the place you put the butter. The lid stays on well, unless you turn it upside down.
