With that in mind, if a pillow is well made, yet somehow doesn't work for you, it's a mighty silly thing to leave a poor review. Now that that's out of the way, this pillow is friggin amazing! It was recommended to me by my doctor when I complained of neck and back pain. He actually gave me one as a sample. This is for the "Gentle Support" model. It's flexible, as in you can sleep in pretty much any position and still rest your head comfortably on it. The middle is indented, giving you a place to put your melon, while the sides support your neck. The 'top' is rolled firm, so if your neck needs firm support there you are. The sides are fluffy, so when you sleep on your side your head stays pretty much level, keeping your neck straight. The 'bottom' is, I assume, the "gentle" part...it supports your neck, but less, eh, enthusiastically than the 'top' part. It took a little getting used to, but I've been using these for years and now I have a tough time sleeping with a regular pillow. Back and neck pain are practically unheard of anymore. This is a good, sturdy pillow. The only wear and tear I've experienced is when I failed to follow directions and placed it in the washing machine. Not a good idea. The pillow gets lumpy and you lose some of the support it offers. After a couple washes it's done for. This is the ONLY reason I have ever replaced this pillow. I'm a bit of a clean freak when it comes to bedding, so washing this pillow according to the directions...hand wash and air dry...doesn't quite seem enough. This time, I purchased a bed bug proof cover for it. That took a little getting used to as well, but now I can wash the cover to my heart's content, satisfying my weirdness and not having to replace these pillows before their time. I have a bulging disc in my lower spine and I was waking up with neck pain after using other pillows so I was hopeful that this pillow would live up to the hype that it received. I selected the gentle support tri-core pillow and I have been using it since I purchased it on June 18, 2015. First, I will say that there was a noticeable chemical-like smell. Perhaps it was stored in a warehouse for months in the plastic bag . . . I'm not sure. I just know that it took at least a week to get rid of the smell. Either way, this was not a deal-breaker for me, just more of a mild annoyance. Second, I, like many other reviewers gave the pillow at least two weeks to get used to. Within the first few nights to the first week, I was still waking up with neck pain after using it. I also disliked having to readjust the pillow stuffing so that it would not bunch or recede in certain areas. Eventually, however, the pillow became more tolerable and I noticed that my neck pain was less and less frequent. Third, after needing to wash the pillow completely, I followed the instructions on the pillow label and allowed the pillow to air dry for several days. I washed it in July and it is now November and I am back to square one. The pillow somehow seems more firm than before and I am waking up with neck pain again. I've had this pillow for 5 or so years now and am planning to replace it with the same. My chiropractor had these in his office and offered a free trial. It does take a little bit of adjustment/getting used to, but waking up with a blazing headache has practically ceased. I used to wake up with them two to three days per week and now if I'm unlucky, once per month. For me, this pillow has been a godsend. **Q: is this pillow so firm that when sleeping on your side your ear begins to throb?** A: Yes. The support is very good, and firm. However, as a side sleeper, yes this pillow causes ear pain. And, for me I started to develop something like callous on the center of the outer part of my ears. The skin became very irritated and started to peel. That went on for nearly a year. I kept using the pillow because it provided very good support and let me sleep well, better than other cervical pillows I have used. Eventually I became used to the ear problem, and now I rarely get irritation. The maker of this pillow really needs to address the irritation problem. I think that a softer thin layer over the firm support material could help, by allowing the ear to rest into a softer thin layer, while the firmer support does it's job. I've had this pillow since 2018. I want a new pillow. I am looking at other newer pillows that may not irritate my ears. **Q: how long do they last?** A: Not sure how long they last yet. I've only had it for about a month. It seems to be very well made, and I expect it to last at least as long as a normal pillow. The fill is dense, and seems like it won't clump up as fast as a normal pillow. **Q: I am a side-sleeper. Sometimes my ears hurt after a night of sleeping on them. Does the trapezoid indentation prevent this from happening?** A: The trapezoid indentation is so low, that I'm unable to place my head in the indentation without my head tilting in an awkward / downward angle. The instructions to the pillow indicate that the areas to the left and right of the indentation are used for side sleeping. I've found these areas are unusally firm and my ears become sensitive after several hours of sleeping on these areas. This pillow came up as an affordable side sleeper specific pillow to help with neck pain. Since using it my neck and shoulders feel so much better.
