It is a ball valve, therefore it is not important which side is the pressure side. However, be advised that the 1/2 NPT thread is too shallow for a standard NPT pipe or fitting to seal properly. No amount of tape or sealant is sufficient for a standard fitting to seal. If the length of a standard tapered pipe fitting is shortened by about 1/8-inch it would probably seal.
