Why do people prefer this over peat moss? Is this stuff much differant?

We order online - I am in a remote location, 3 hours away from a hardware store that carries peat moss. This was the number one reason that I researched alternatives to begin with, but I encountered the sustainability issues with peat moss usage and it made a lot of sense to me to use coconut coir, which is making use of something that would have been discarded for its fruit anyhow.

Is this coir stringy or is it pretty chopped up?

GREAT STUFFWith correct amount of water it will fluff like sheep's wool, too much and you turn it to paste. However it will fluff as it dries. I mix 5 gal water with this in a 5.2 cube wheelbarrow and add 2 cubes of perlite. You can put a gal of water in a wheelbarrow lay the cube in and the coir will expand only so far. you can then scrape the damp stuff off and store the remainder of the coir block.

Do I need to do anything to this before use other than add water? I.e buffering. What is buffering?

I know that to expand the coco fiber you need to add water Buffering will change the acidity or alkalinity of the coco fiber - learning the Ph of the fiber will direct you to the proper buffering agent. I've never considered this as important. I add the fiber to my soil as an amendment to make it more friable.
