Artists' Master Series: Color and Light

To me it should be a must have for every artist. It has helped me to understand light & color better. I have gone through it really slow since the concepts are somewhat technical, and I have to give me time to ponder about the concepts before reading the next pages. It's a book that I would definitely keep coming back to read in the future so I can get new insights that I may have missed before.

Fantastic book. Want to learn about color theory? This is the book you need.

The book is bigger and heavier than I thought it would be. Full of extensive information to help teach me not only about how to color and use lighting, but color theory, shading on several surfaces, creating backgrounds, putting focus where you want it and how to simplify what I thought was supposed to be hard work. No matter what, I will learn something from this book even if other things go over my head. Not for people who hate reading words or just want picture tutorials. There are a lot of images in this book, but not JUST step by step instructions.

A great and accessible and well designed launching point for any artist of any medium. I’ve been recommended two highly revered books in the past on the topic, namely Color and Light by Gurney and Light for Visual artists by Yot, but found them incomplete and slightly disorganized in content, scope, and instruction. This is a masterclass on how you make an educational art book. Every Master Series book will now be added to my collection including their new one on composition and narrative. It is a gorgeous book too. Easily the most beautiful one on my shelf. Like I mentioned before I ripped a file of it originally online but after going through about 70 pages, found that it was invaluable and I would hate myself if I missed the opportunity to grab one of these while they’re still in print. If you’re a beginner, they will take you step by step introducing you to the sheer basics of light and color. even if you’re an intermediate or advanced artist, I’m sure there’s something of value for you in here.

This book has a wide breadth of knowledge in it. I bought it to be better with figure painting and digital painting. The book is definitely skewed towards the latter. I appreciated many of the in depth topics I didn't even know I needed to learn about but was happy to learn. Many of the the topics I skipped, because I'm also a photographer and already was well versed in some subjects. I'm sure some will have some aspects they have already mastered but you will find a treasure trove of topics you never even thought about.

Well worth the money. I’m about a tenth of the way through the book and already have learned so much. This is easily one of the best and most expansive books on color and light out there. It’s so good that I bought their other artists master series books as well.

I am a professional painter for over 30 years. I have admired Nathan Fowkes understanding of color for quite some time, and sprung for this book, but am disappointed in the print quality. The color images are somewhat flat and lack the intensity that I know is there. Nevertheless I am sure the info will prove helpful.

Adoro este libro tiene una gran cantidad de información, aunque no me parece que sea un libro acto para principiantes, se necesita leer, leer y volver a releer y por supuesto practicar lo aprendido, cabe destacar que es un libros más enfocado en la teoría con varios ejemplos de artistas famosos explicando como ellos aplican la teoría del color y la luz.

Very good book

Colour & Light can be described as an Artist tool with advanced placements of colour & light in traditional & digital artworks. Especially in landscape scene generation. Page after page contains a beautiful display of imagery & text to convey precisely how each aspect can be applied for fantastic results. Well written! The perfect art student gift.
