Singer 7640 Confidence Computerised Sewing Machine, White

I bought this sewing machine for my college practice, and it’s been a great investment. The build quality is solid, and it performs well on various fabrics. Bought to replace my old sewing machine which had been handed down from my grandma (pedal broke no spare parts available) the first thing you notice is the outer shell is plastic making this machine so much lighter than I am used to, I can lift it with one hand. Second thing I noticed was a few of the accessories were missing amazon were brilliant at sorting it out. It has a top loading bobbin easy to get used to along with the self threading you just have to make sure the needle is in the right place, which if you let the machine stop with the needle in the up position it is. There is a very good video to watch for setting up the machine. I was able to set off with sewing hems and only had to keep a very light hand on guiding it through straight. When it came to using shirring elastic I had to fiddle about with it to figure out how to get the top bobbin to load it. I chose this machine as it seemed to come with the better accessory choice and at the better price. A beginner would be able to use this machine just as well as a pro, I have only used my sewing machine to make curtains and fix rips and split seems. But when this machine arrived I bought a dress pattern my first ever and in four days I had my very own new dress,

I've just bought this to replace my much-loved Singer Futura which has finally died after over 40 years of service.It's an excellent machine and relatively straightforward to use but you do need to take care threading it correctly. I found that the tension on the bobbin didn't engage the first few times I tried it, but after a bit of practice it's fine. I will advise you to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS and not be a smart-arse like me thinking I wouldn't need to after years of dressmaking. (Don't let this put you off!)The embroidery stiches are good, but again, prepare properly with the right sized needle and don't buy cheap thread.All together I would recommend this for someone with a little experience.....maybe an upgrade from an older machine like I have.It's a bargain at the moment with a huge price reduction.

Purchased this machine as it was a Singer however in reality it's cheap and nasty straight from Beijing, it was only after a few weeks it was returned to the manufacturer for repair after it decided to start sewing of its own accord which is highly dangerous. It was returned and after a month it started to have the same fault of sewing without input.I decided to check on Google if others had similar issues and there was plenty of the same complaints, so I decided to return to Amazon for a full refund, I don't normally comment on Amazon but given how potentially dangerous this machine is I'm doing my civic duty by warning customer to stay clear and opt for any else but this machine

I haven't had a new sewing machine in years, this is so much more advanced than my last one. My teenage daughter picked up how to set the lettering and change stitches straight away, (I needed to read, and re-read the instructions), but after a day of practice I understand the stitches and lettering now. We are going to get a lot of use out of this machine. Highly recommended.

This is a very good machine for both pro and amateur users. There is some very useful videos on the Singer YouTube site including a 26 min setup of this machine. Two things, although this is not a very top end machine at over 300 quid it's not cheap so why supply it with a stupid flat plate (see photo) as a so called screwdriver. Difficult to hold and use. I purchased a sewing machine driver for 6 pounds for 2, I don't think it would have eaten into there profits too much to have included a proper one. The second thing is that there are 3 less presser feet than in the setup video. Another money saving exercise I suppose but there are many third party presser feet out there at reasonable prices. But overall I am pleased with this machine and Singer is a top make and well supported with accessories.
