The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test consists of verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing sections. This book is the only test prep guide that contains questions and topics from actual tests administered worldwide. It contains verbal and quantitative questions from seven actual GRE General Tests and sample analytical writing topics from the complete pool of topics for the analytical writing measure. It includes information about the structure of the test, answering procedures, explanations of correct answers for verbal and quantitative questions, sample writing responses with scores, scoring information, a math review, and test-taking strategies. Review: Great reference for GRE - I took the GRE twice within two months. November 2009 and again in Dec 2009. Princeton Review was right on my score difference. My 2nd test scores wasn't as good. This book is an easy read with some humor in it. The writers do a good job building your confidence. The best advice that I found in the book is the importance of scoring really well in the first 1/3 of the test! That is crucial as your score is pretty much determined by then. ETS book doesn't acknowledge it but its true! Also, the Princeton Review provided a perfect template to utilize when writing the analytical section. I scored a 4 on that. After reading these reviews and other reviews on desertcart, I purchased this one (2010) plus Barron's Essential Words for the GRE, and Barron's GRE flash cards. There is an overlap with the words of the GRE flash cards and vocabulary words in the Princeton Review, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I found myself reading through the Princeton Review because its an easy read and it gives you very useful strategies in taking the test. I used them and scored well on the math. My verbal wasn't great but if I had more time to build my vocabulary I would have done a lot better. This is a must have book! Also, the online companion is great because you can practice a GRE. The scores I got on that test were close to the ones that I got on the actual GRE. For vocabuary, I would purchase the Barron's Essential Words which I previously mention. That is a thorough book but you need to give yourself several months to work through the book. There were words in that book that were on the GRE. For math, in addition to the Princeton Review, I got a lot out of the GRE flash cards. The math cards in Barron's GRE flash cards were very helpful. Also, I would buy ETS's test booklet as well. Like the princeton review after you take the practice test questions in the book they explain the logic behind why which answer is the right one. If you can give yourself a solid 3 months of practicing you will do well. Princeton Review discourages from studying too long on the test because you can forget some of the strategies by the time you take the test. I had to take time out to write this review there are so many resources out there. Also, check out [...]-you can practice your vocabulary, GRE type questions, and math questions. It's a great site. I hope this helps someone. Wish everyone the best. Review: Buy this book for practice especially if English is your 2nd language - I bought this book to practice for a GRE after a GRE debacle. I went in to test without preparation, and got some really horrifying scores - 440 Verbal and 590 Math. This was a wake up call, so I purchased 2 books which I used to study for the GRE, one of which was this book, Practicing to Take the GRE 10th Ed by ETS. I also had limited time to practice - having procrastinated, I only had 3 weeks before the score submission deadline. I took the test this morning, and the resulting scores are much better - 660 verbal, and 730 math, more than sufficient for the grad school I have in mind. The value of this GRE practice book is its verbal and math practice tests. Although these practice tests are pen and paper, they provide two important advantages: (1) you can get a lot faster because these tests have more questions which are to be done in less time than the computer-based GRE, and (2) these are real GRE questions that will give you a preview of all the nuances that you would need to understand on sentence completions and analogies. There are other benefits such as picking up words you have never seen or used before, and recalling all the math concepts you have probably long forgotten. All of the above was important to me because English is my second language, and, therefore, my vocabulary is somewhat limited. When taking the GRE the second time, I still did not know all the words - I don't think it is possible - but I knew enough to exclude the inappropriate answers. I would not recommend buying this book to study the strategy - Princeton GRE books do a much better job from the outsider (test taker) perspective. However, practicing with this book will give you insights into the logic behind the GRE questions. To learn the effective strategy, I would recommend Cracking the GRE with DVD, 2011 Edition by Princeton Review. I also used Anki, a free flash card software which you can download off the net, to practice the "hit parade" GRE words provided by the Princeton Review.

Great Supplement to GRE study library
I purchased this book via amazon because it was cheaper than ordering from ETS. I used this as an extra to another book/cd provided by Princeton Review (PR). This book is great in terms of PRACTICE!! it allows you multiple opportunities to work through questions associated with the GRE. I felt that I was really able to apply the knowledge/strategies given to me by the PR book. The limitation is simply that you take as much time as you need to answer the questions in this book, which is not indicative of the test. Make sure you find materials that allow you to take online practice GREs on addition to this book. Practice with this book and apply the strategies to timed practice tests. Great resource would recommend.'

Book doesn't keep up with changes to GRE!
Isn't it about time a multimillion dollar operation such as ETS (which, by the way, is tax exempt due to another brilliant loophole in the system) put at least a minimal effort into producing materials that truly benefit its customers? In addition to this grossly outdated book, which contains seven previously released tests dating from 1986 to 1992 (my God, Ronald Reagan was still in office then!), ETS is also responsible, or perhaps irresponsible, for PowerPrep, a software product not compatible with Macs and unable to run on Vista. Good job ETS -- seems you're really interested in helping students prepare for the GRE! One of the math problems in this book uses a scenario in which Maria buys gasoline for $1.49 a gallon. Either Maria lives in Bahrain, or ETS is egregiously out of touch with modern American society. Worse yet, this book does not include any of the new question types recently added to both the math and verbal sections of the GRE. Perhaps if ETS charged the equivalent of 1986 dollars for this antique it would possibly be worth it, but given that they offer old stuff for new prices, I recommend taking your 2008 dollars (what's left of them) and picking up a copy of a Princeton Review product. At least that will give you the low down on the current test, something more than ETS seems willing to do. We hated you for bringing us the SAT, and now we loathe you for providing the GRE and expecting us to fork over good money for nothing! The sooner ETS and all standardized testing is abolished, the better!!!

GRE: Practicing to Take the General Test, 10th Edition
I am currently enrolled in an online GRE review course. I haven't done an online course before and didn't get the book until late. I have had excellent luck with Amazon's used book outlet and decided to give it a try for the GRE text. I was please to find the text at such a reasonable price. It was delivered with in 3 or 4 days. I didn't lose any time going through the Amazon used book service. Thanks!

This is really JUST okay; not recommended stand-alone
I took the GRE several years ago (2007) and I bought this book because the prep course I took used this to teach the GRE. The way this book is structured is similar to the written test (and I took the online course). What I liked about it was that it was ETS's "official" prep book and it offered questions that you would most likely see on the exam. My instructor mainly used this book for our "homework" and took questions from certain pages to show how to solve them. Other than that, however, it's not very good at assisting on how to do well on the actual GRE. There are very few strategies and the examples in the book are not very good. Most of the strategies I learned to get the score I got were from my instructor. Plus, I hate to admit this, but the book was kinda boring. This book is also very dated, so it may not be representative of the actual GRE exam now. In any case, I wouldn't use this as a stand-alone study guide; this would book would probably work well if you used a prep book from another well-known study company like Kaplan or Princeton Review.

Great!
Delivery time was very good even I received it earlier than I expected. Furthermore, the product precisely matched with the advertising. I definitely I recommend this product and the seller.

I was extremely disappointed
Dear Amazon, I purchased the book GRE:Practicing to Take the General Test. I did receive it quite timely. I did use it to study for the GRE General Test. I did find the section on the verbal/reading comprehension/vocabulary part of the test to be useful. However, I did not like the explanations for the Math/Qualitative section. I don't know if a math professor authored this particular part of the book. I had a great deal of difficulty understanding the explanations in this math section. Therefore, I was glad I had also purchased a separate book which reviewed the Math/Qualitative section of the GRE in a more clear and concise manner. I was not very happy with the ETS version of the Math/Qualitative section in the book I purchased by ETS. Therefore, I used the other book to review my math skills. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Elizabeth H. Roessner
