There is so much room for customization to really make it unique too, with all sorts of places to put patches, pins, etc. My ONLY issue is that the water bottle pockets are only big enough for about a regular sized standard plastic bottle, but I could always just put the water inside the backpack (as long as it doesn’t leak). Overall, I’m very satisfied with the purchase, and I look forward to using it for school! It comes with the patches you see. They have velcro bottoms that can be placed in any order on upper half of backpack. On the inside compartment that's not shown, is a section to put a ipad or tablet. **Q: Is there a reason a dial caliper is in one of the photos, is it a reference to the game in some way?** A: Not as far as I know. I think it is just a 'look at what random stuff you can have in the bag'. So if you ever need to bring your dial caliper with you, as well as laptop and many other stuff, this is the bag you want! I must disclaim, I haven't tried to carry a dial caliper in the bag personally. **Q: Does it come with patches?** A: Yes. **Q: Can the shoulder straps be un clipped?** A: No they are locked in. No fast release straps.
