The instructions ARE in the package, and describe how to make sparks. One needs to further understand how to make fire with sparks. Not difficult at all, but it does need to be understood. Look on YouTube for videos of making fire with a ferro rod. (Ferro is abbrveiation for ferrocerium.) Easy peasy. For the question. YOU DO NOT USE THE DIAMOND ROD. You DO use the CARBIDE to quickly scrape the rod for a shower of sparks. As another answer stated, normally one removes the black paint coating on the rod first and then use the back of a knife to make sparks. In this case, since the carbide is so sharp, you can just plain use the carbide to 'scrape the paint off.' as you make sparks for the first time. Also, reading between the lines: If the rod is protected from heavy oxidation with paint, it needs to be repainted for long-term storage. At the least put some fish oil from your frying pan on it to coat it and prevent oxidation. **Q: Where is this made?** A: USA **Q: Can it sharpen a big knife?** A: Yes from large to small I have had no problems...
