My wife really loves this for applying ice-melter on our stairs, as it provides lots of options for distributing (difference sized openings), and is much small and lighter than the ones sold by the ice-melter companies. She would highly recommend !

I've used this for fertilizer and Revive on the lawn, and it's been great for those jobs. It's a simple, useful tool that has worked really well for my lawn-care needs. The small size is a big plus. It takes up much less storage space than a traditional walk-behind broadcast spreader, which I appreciate when putting everything away. If you want a compact hand shaker for lawn applications, I've been really happy with this one.

I wish I had purchased one of these years ago. Works so well for side dressing gardens. I have very large gardens. And these weren’t very well for what I’m doing. I did corn cucumbers, pumpkins watermelons. And these made putting fertilizer out so much easier.

I am planning to get another to fill with ice melt and put into the car in case needed. I previously used large coffee cans and a garden trowel to cast salt on the driveway and steps but that method does not provide even distribution. I ended up with too much in some places and not enough in others. I bought a hand-cranked spreader but it was really for seeds and the rock salt would not go through it. I had to put the salt into a canvas bag and break it down with a hammer, which was very tedious. This Chapin 8740A can accommodate different size pellets, so I can use it for seeds, fertilizer, ice melt for sidewalks/steps and rock salt for the driveway. I tip my hat to Chapin for offering such a superior, versatile product for only $9.18. A lower price than many others and yet high-quality design & manufacture.
