Is this good for long hair?

My hair is past my shoulders, about halfway down my back - not super long. But I plop my hair in this and then twist and secure the loop to the button. I do not twist my hair in the fabric because I don’t want to break or damage my hair. Plop first and it works great!

Is this one ply cotton or is it thicker?

Hi, it is thicker like a nice thick shirt or light sweather.

what can this do that a normal t-shirt can't?

Nothing. The concept is that the design lets you twist it and secure it in place, but on my hair it's way too loose and doesn't really dry well. In fact a normal t-shirt might work better.
