Very effective. Easy to use.
This trap caught two rats in the first two days I had it. On the fourth day apparently another rat got caught, but was able to leave with the trap. Lol. Somewhere in my neighborhood there is a rat dragging around a trap by its tail. I intend to leash it to a post next time.

Works in 30 minutes
Caught the rat in 30 minutes! It was in my car for 10 days, I tried other popular methods but none worked. This trap is amazing! I couldn’t get the bait container off, just put a bit of pb on top of it.

They Work Well, But…
Bottom line? It’s works exceptionally well.Caveat: Have a strong stomach. They work almost TOO well. I set 2. One chopped off the rat’s head and the other caught a mouse by the leg causing it to make a traumatized “crying” like sound and drag the trap 40 feet. Conclusion: These catch rodents, but be prepared for the aftermath. My wife said she was traumatized 😬

If within the first 30 days, one of your traps starts to trigger with no sign of a rat, sent it back
One of the rat traps is either not working correctly or a very smart rodent has fun making it shut without catching them. The rat trap worked well 2 times and it has been in use for 45 days, so is not covered by the 30 day return policy. I don't know if i'm not setting it correctly, or if it has prematurely worn out. At any rate, I hesitate to buy a new one if I have the same bad luck with it as well.

Yeah they built a better mouse trap
I love this product for its ease of use and quality build. It is a dirty job that is not fun, but if you have any kind of land surrounding you, this is a potential issue that must be addressed. It is a great value for money due to its reusability and the size will accommodate the biggest of vermin. It does have plenty of bite to it so it has to be respected and one must be careful like any rat trap but it is easy to set and easy to empty. I've purchased this item more than once and will continue to do so.

NOT - 'The Best Rat Trap Ever!' as I had written in an earlier review
THIS IS AN UPDATE of my formerly glowing report on these traps:Am going back to the horrible old wooden based ones because THEY DO NOT BREAK like these Tomcat PLASTIC traps do!Got my first Tomcat Trap at a local store in 2021 - worked like a charm and STILL DOES!I decided to up my catch when the Rats BEGAN TO TRY and move in for winteR 21-22 So I got two MORE Tomcat Traps in Nov & BOTH ended up with BROKEN BAIT CUPS after snapping their first rat.OK - I worked around that by putting some peanut butter on the floor of the trap UNDER the trigger plate. It worked but was messy and required soaking and washing to get the old bait and goo off. Not a fun job but oh, well. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.I ordered one more Tomcat Rat TRap this fall and THAT TOO ENDED UP WITH A BROKEN BAIT CUP - yesterday - when it caught its first rat. Will take some fotos of the broken bait cup flange and post later. Why this is happening I have no clue. The first one from 2021 is just fine. The traps from here aren't. Maybe the mfg changed the plastic recipe? Knockoffs? Don't know... all I know is that when the rat gets caught one of the flange things that holds the bait cup in place when you twist it into the hole where it goes. The trap is constructed so that there is NO overtwisting possible so its not something I am doing. The result is that when you lift the trap to release the carcass the bait cup falls out because the flange has broken.SO - Like I said - back to the horrible old wooden based ones which NEVER BREAK.~~~This WAS my glowing report:Definitely catches rats. I'd post a foto of the carcasses mine have caught but that would be crude.A word of caution for new users: These are SUPER POWERFUL so if yu have a cat or dawg - put this trap behind some sort of screen or under something that the rats can get into but small noses and tiny fingers can't. I use an old oven rack propped up against the wall (which has a nail in it to keep it from falling) in the sun-porch and that does the trick.Oh, yeah - as with ALL rat Traps - attach a string or wire to them and anchor it to something else so on the very rare instance the rat isn't dispatched - the trap does not disappear along with a very pissed off rat.Note to the mfg: the little cup thingy for peanut butter works nicely but IF the trap is cold & bounces around in the process of doing it's job - the flange that holds the cup in place sometimes breaks and it's hard to remove and refill. That recently happened so I just put the peanut butter under the flap and in the back... SNAP! Worked like a charm.THE BEST THING ABOUT THESE TRAPS aside from their power is the step on feature - you just put the bait in and put the trap on the floor and step on the back and it is set. Works great in reverse too when you wan to remove the rat.

Great AFTER you modify it
First of all, this trap is very reliable in that it can be used over and over and over again. Much better than the wooden snap trap, but only after you modify it! There are three issues with these traps. 1) The trigger point is too close to the opening, meaning every now and then you have a LIVE rat with its hand stuck in the trap. 2) It's not heavy enough, so the trap can be dragged around by the rat easily, providing an escape. 3) The spring is not strong enough to for a quick death, giving the rat time to wiggle its way out (which they've done on several occasions.I've made some modifications to address these short-comings. It's still not 100%, but close! The first and easiest thing to do is make sure you place the bait further back on the trap. Believe me, having to kill a rat with its hand stuck on the trap because they triggered it too early is not fun.The next modification was to drill screws in 3 spots on the front of the trap. That way the chances of the rat getting impaled by the screw and dying instantly is higher and if it doesn't die instantly, it can't wiggle its way out. The important thing is to use small screws and don't go down too far otherwise you'll have to unscrew the rat from the trap lol and that's gross. I go down until I see the screws aligned with the jaws and that makes it easy for the rat to drop out of the trap by just holding it up using gravity. The final and probably most important modification: I built a wooden box around the trap and left a small opening in front that goes into the trap. This is great for several reasons. One is that other animals or birds can't get caught by it anymore. Two is that it no longer looks like a trap, so the rat is less suspicious. Three is that I can place this outdoors and rain won't get in and so I don't have re-bait it. Four is that the rat can't move the trap around and try to escape, it's stuck.I've caught many rats this way now with traps that are about a year old!
