I've used both formulations of Dr Ohhira's probiotics, they are both good and the ingredients just about match the prescription only probiotics the gastroenterologists are prescribing. With that said, I've had bouts of ulcerative colitis for 25 plus years, have tried all of the 5-ASA drugs and steroids to no avail. I suspect my condition started with long term use of Cipro which in turn caused an imbalance of flora in my gut (oddly enough, the only drug that has immediately stopped my bleeding was another antibiotic, amoxicillin given to me for an abscessed tooth upon which, after two years of bleeding, the bleeding stopped (I believe the amoxicillin knocked back the overgrowth of bad bacteria). Problem is the gatroenterologist will not prescribe it for a flare as it is not "in the book" (extremely frustrating). Nonetheless, the thought my gut flora was out of balance and subsequent research introduced me to probiotics. I tried them all and it was Dr Ohhira's original formula that brought any relief, it eased the flare. I recently had another flare and decided to try the Professional formula. After following the directions to take an initial loading of 5 in the morning and 5 at night, after 7 or 8 days I stopped bleeding (after 3 months of non-stop). I believe the addition of the postbiotic metabolites in the Professional formula made the difference, particularly after researching and understanding their purpose (and because I observed easing of symptoms when I ate the kind of fiber that creates these naturally for you). My take is these probiotics are the fast path to reestablishing a balance in gut flora. Everyone's flares are different so I will share that mine typically start after a little too much "vacationing" where I may imbibe more than usual (typically not a drinker) and when I overdo sugar (I have a terrible sweet tooth) and dairy (specifically milk). These seem to be a triggering combo for me when over indulged (moderation is something I appreciate more everyday). I believe my gut flora balance is borderline and sugars push me over the edge when too much consumed - and the bleeding starts. Hope this helps someone, ulcerative colitis is a maddening condition and a gastroenterologist, when pushed, will admit they haven't a clue why it occurs.

The "loading dose" some people describe in the reviews is something I could not find being recommended by any reputable doctor. I saw a few anti-vaxxer types recommend it and that was it. In the interest of pseudo-science, I tried it anyway. I took a box in a week. That was some expensive poo. Results? Well, the eczema I was caring for went away completely (maybe it would have gone on its own) and I can eat ice cream and cheese again (I've been lactose intolerant for decades). I'll probably have to keep taking the probiotic to keep eating milk products, but I'll go to the normal dosage now that my first box is gone and the "loading" phase is over. I won't ever really know if that "loading phase" was necessary or if somebody's advice just cost me an extra $40. You decide there. It is very difficult to find good information on probiotics on the 'net. I can tell you that a gastroenterologist recommended them to a close relative after colon cancer. He looked me in the eye and told me to take them too. Here I am. Again, this is not medical advice. Don't try to glean medical advice off the net or you might end up missing a section of colon. Got it? I'm just offering anecdotes. Why did I end up with Dr. Ohhiras? I liked the idea that they were essentially delivered in their own growth medium. It's nice that they do not require refrigeration. It's nice that Dr. Ohhira had a PhD (he's dead now) and actually studied fermentation and bacteria. You can find his research papers online. Do other brands have PhD's studying their own probiotic strains? Undoubtedly. Did I have good luck with this one? Oh yes. I have vague hope that in a year I'll be able to eat wheat again too. Did it cure everything I ever had? No. Of course not. The claims made about probiotics are ridiculous because supplements are not regulated and they are allowed to make all kinds of claims. If you've taken some anti-biotics, or you aren't digesting some things properly, or your doctor told you to take some, or you have specific health issues, then these appear to be a good brand to use. I know they are doing something because I couldn't eat milk products before - and now I can. I guess that's the best endorsement I can give it. I'm going to eat pizza now. BTW, if this doesn't work for you - Digestive Advantage Lactose Defense Formula has a similar action - these probiotics aren't unique in allowing the lactose intolerant to eat dairy - I just like that they deliver more strains of beneficial bacteria than only the ones that take care of milk.

These probiotics are the best I've ever taken. There are things happening in my gut - lots of movement happening. A little nausea sometimes but I can remedy that pretty quickly with my essential oils. There are things coming out of me that I'm so grateful are coming out. I've been cleansing off & on for about 17 years in different ways, but these are making more of a significant visible impact than a lot of other products I've tried. I started out with the original formula and it didnt really seem to be doing much, yet I knew I needed something strong due to the stuff happening in my body & mind. I'm so glad I gave these a whirl. I think it's very possible I have a big parasite or lets just make it plural - parasites. But this nex part is highly interesting to me. After I started taking these, within the first week I started noticing some pulsation feelings, kinda like 'knock knock' in the areas just above & just below my navel - not a pulse - this is more random. This can go on for a few minutes to a half hour. Then I also started noticing physical movements from left to right, and one side of my navel will rise up higher than the other as I'm looking down at my belly - it really doesnt seem like poop moving around. This is different. I'm thinking these probiotics are awakening these things in my belly because they don't like what's being put into the environment, so maybe they are on high alert and trying to move away & hide somewhere. My sugar cravings have really started dissapating & I'm using other cleansing essential oils too. I'm thinking after another week or two, I may try some organic turpentine (pine oil) to see if that clears out any of these things. There is a lot of positive info about using organic turpentine to clear out parasites for people into natural healing. There is a very specific protocol, as like many other things, it can be toxic/deadly in high doses. I have tried it before but I didn't see any action like I'm seeing now, but it did make me slightly nauseated. I also heard frozen organic castor oil capsules can expel them too. Anyhow, I'm very glad I gave these a try. Definitely recommend them to anyone with gut issues.

I have extreme acid reflux with LPR. I have spent hundreds (maybe even thousands) of dollars for something that could help with the cough that it causes. I’ve tried soooo many brands of probiotics on the market and this is the first one that has worked! It took about three days taking one pill twice a day before I noticed any changes or improvements, but at day four… viola! It’s as if this is the magic formula my body has been searching for. Please, please, please don’t ever change these ingredients and don’t ever stop making it! Thank you!

I have tried other probiotics several different times, trying to spend less, but you know what, these are the ONLY probiotics that work for me. I know thye cost more, but frankly they are worth it. I only use the PROFESSIONAL strength ones becuase they are the best. The reason I gave them four stars instead of five is because I wish they would take out the "carrageenan" from the ingredients. Here is an excerpt from the prevention website about it..."carrageenan appears to be particularly destructive to the digestive system, triggering an immune response similar to that your body has when invaded by pathogens like Salmonella" I mean this product should be 100% natural, and carrageenan is just BAD stuff. After a few rounds of probiotics, I tried this product and it worked better than others at replenishing the gut flora, felt better right away, and after 2-3 months dramatically better. I have food intolerances, but with the intensive fermentation in the production of this product, none of the ingredients that otherwise would give me a reaction bothered me, it was smooth without any problems to take it. I find this professional version a bit stronger than their other less expensive one, but both are effective. What I did was start with this one to give the body a big boost, then switched to the other Ohhira's cheaper one after a couple months for a finishing and maintenance dose. You could always see if the other one works fine for you, but if you want a more powerful acute healing, this one can be the way to go. In an acute situation, I found it to be more effective than some other high quality probiotics that I take for maintenance, such Primal Defense, which is very good, but packs less punch for a post antibiotic or acute intestinal illness episode, while Ohhira's really comes through when the intestine is depleted. I've done the Ohhira's in those situations, such as post antibiotics, more than once, probably 3 or 4 times over the last 20 years and it's been repeatedly the most effective. For maintenance doses, though, I don't think it is as worth the extra money, instead then I use Primal Defense, and there are other good ones, so for maintenance no need to spend the extra money for this product. But if you haven't tried it and are doing maintenance doses, you could try the Ohhira's for a month and see if there's a difference, it's worth getting in your system at some point.
