Clear gesso will also allow you to paint over it but you will see the image you’re covering as you paint. **Q: Would someone recommend prepping a metal surface for painting with this product a necessity? (I am unfamiliar with Gesso)** A: Yes, it will be beneficial to prep the metal surface. You will want to roughen up the surface with steel wool or sanding paper. Then be sure to wash it really well to remove any oils or debris. Due to the expense of painting, I decided to try the Liquitex Value Series Basics Gesso. It came in a 1.89 ltr. (1/2 gal.) bucket. I have never been more disappointed in a product!! I used it, but it was difficult to use because it had the consistency of Jello. It did not thin well, and even had lumps that needed to be strained out. I still have 1/2 of the bucket left, and only use it on projects that do not require a fine texture.
