MARK MILLAR and STEVE MCNIVEN--who last teamed for the monumental CIVIL WAR--bring us the most important WOLVERINE story of the 21st century. Nobody knows what happened on the night the heroes fell. All we know is that they disappeared and evil triumphed and the bad guys have been calling the shots ever since. What happened to Wolverine is the biggest mystery of all. For 50 years, no one has heard hide nor hair from him...and in his place stands an old man called Logan. A man concerned only about his family. A man pushed to the brink by the HULK GANG. A man forced to help an old friend--the blind archer, HAWKEYE--drive three thousand miles to secure his family's safety. Get ready for the ride of your life, Logan. COLLECTING: Wolverine #66-72, Wolverine Giant-Size Old Man Logan Review: 😁 - I absolutely loved this book. I loved the story where the villains won the war, heroes are almost extinct, dystopia ensues, wastelands appeal and so forth. Now, after the Hulks fiasco, what the OML story arc should be afterwards is OML going on a futile but necessary revenge tour of trying to assassinate world bosses like Doctor Doom, Kingpin or whatever until his body gave out while having the stories being told in a style reminiscent of exploitation movies. Instead it's a stupid dimensional excursion to where most of the run is OML being out of the wastelands into some dimension where everything is typically normal in comic book land. It's not to say that the stories were bad. I like the stories with Maestro and Bullseye among others but this route they took is absolutely misguided and a complete miss. The overall OML run gets a 6/10 but this particular paperback gets a 10/10. Review: Great for long-term AND new readers - Millar does it again. This is an out-of-continuity tale set many years in a dystopian future where the supervillains have taken over the world. By out-of-continuity, I mean that you do not have to come into this book having any previous knowledge of the characters at all, so don't worry new readers. Long-term readers need not fret either because there's nice nods to Marvel's past in this book like the Spider-Mobile as well as the story being similar to stories like Days of Future Past. This was a fun, fast-paced story with tons of "holy crap!" moments as well as amazing art by Steve McNiven. It reads fast because there's not a lot of dialogue or annoying thought boxes, but that's mostly due to Millar not wanting to obscure any of McNiven's beautiful pencils. The phrase a picture is worth a thousand words is applicable to this story. If you've read Civil War you'll know the caliber of artist McNiven is, and the story in Old Man Logan is even stronger than CW. The main story starts out with a much older Logan (no longer the superhero Wolverine) struggling to make ends meet for his family on his property in a now barren California ranch. He can no longer make rent and his landlords, the Hulk Gang, have killed families who missed their rent. He is approached by his old Avenger friend Hawkeye who propositions they go on a journey across the country to New Babylon on the East Coast to deliver a mysterious package. For his troubles, Hawkeye will give Logan $500, which will more than pay the rent. Logan is reluctant at first, he just wants to live in peace with his family and had a traumatizing incident that has scarred him into no longer wanting to fight but he finally agrees and they go off on the adventure. It's very interesting to see everybody in this world to be in complete poverty, with children being lucky to have 50 year old Xbox's. One of the stops is at a superhero shrine where people gather to pray the heroes will come back to save them. Almost all of America's former great cities are in complete ruins and the survivors have to worry about roaming dinosaurs, cruel supervillain overlords and Moloids (underground creatures that wreak havoc on the surface world). There will be a cool version of Venom in this story, as well as the new Kingpin. In the end, we will find out what was in the package, there will be a explanation as to why Logan is no longer Wolverine and there's an amazing showdown between Wolverine (did you really think he was going to be a pacifist the whole book?) and the Hulk Gang as well as the President. It's strongly hinted there will be a sequel and just today Millar has said he will begin working on one due to the strong success of Old Man Logan.

What should be demanded more from comics.
A long time ago, writers of comics and tv shows came up with an interesting concept. Let's flash forward years into the future and see how how our characters are doing. Uusally they are not doing very good. Such is the case for marvel's own Wolverine. This story is set apx 30 years in the future and has our favorite brawler struggling in a post apocalyptic America, in what used to be California. He has a wife and kids, non-mutant kids. He is a farmer and is trying to make ends meat, and make enough to pay the Hulk Boys the overdue rent. The country has been completely over-run by villians, with each carving out a piece of the ol U.S. for themselves. The Red Skull has proclaimed himself president and spends his days wearing the fallen Captain America's suit around like Buffalo Bob from Silence of the Lambs wore women's skins. Logan is finally starting to look his age, but is still tough to boot, and can still heal luckily. Something awful happened to him though 30 years ago, and he hasn't popped a claw since. A self proclaimed pacifast until a blind Hawkeye comes along with an offer for him to make some much needed money. Will not give away any spoilers here, will just say if you have not read this comic series, buy this trade paperback. I read the entire thing in 3 hours, I could not put it down!!! Solid story telling here, great inking, and as usual great action by Marvel's greatest commodity, Wolverine. Can't rave enough about this, also sorry for spelling mistakes, as I always say I went to public school, where the teachers couldn't spell themselves...

It's Mad Max, The Dark Knight Returns, and Wolverine All Rolled Into One!
There are really only a handful of Wolverine stories that exist out there that I would consider to be "must-reads", or essential to the character. And the story that Mark Millar and Steve McNiven helped create here is something amazing. It's set in a "what-if" scenario where the world has pretty much fallen into chaos and desperation following a cataclysmic struggle with the "super-villains" decades before hand... and what you get is a harsh Mad Max-like world inhabited by what little remains of the Marvel Universe. You will encounter a bunch of famous Marvel characters, both old and new... with of course, a central focus on Wolverine (now much older and pacifistic). The story itself isn't as deep or complex as Millar and McNiven's previous work on Marvel's "Civil War" story arc, but you get a fresh and meaningful look at Wolverine's character that I guarantee you has never quite been seen before. Millar's story is fun, but also gutsy and grim at times... so I wouldn't recommend this story for younger readers, but for those older readers it is a home-run chapter for the character and also acts as a great closing chapter for the Marvel Universe itself (if only a possible one). If anything, the highest selling-point for this book is the artwork... Steve McNiven's style is just gorgeous! And really helps the pages flow. As soon as I flipped the book open I just couldn't put it down. From the sprawling deserts and sands to the crumbling remnants of Washington D.C. ... never has the Marvel world felt so real. I would highly recommend this book to any fan of the world of Marvel, or comic books in general. A great read!

Excellent story concept but only slightly above average execution due ...
Excellent story concept but only slightly above average execution due to the believably factor that if all the marvel supervillains succeeded in killing all the marvel superheros on earth that wolverine would be the only superhero still alive when there are literally hundred of marvel superheros that are immortal/unkillable and the weakest part of the story is *Spoiler Alert that Red Skull being a weak sauce supervillain Captain America easily defeats time after time again would be the one villain with the impossible ability to assemble the entire world's supervillains under his command when literally every supervillain especially a deranged Hulk would laugh him out of his SS uniform and snap his neck with a pinkie flick. And that a D list Spiderman villain like Mysterio would be able to trick Wolverine into killing all the Xmen when Charles Xavier or Jean Grey would have known what the super villain plan was and memory wiped every single one of them before ever getting near the Xmansion? C'mon.. And Spider Mobile, A Jeep that stick to walls? C'mon! All that being said, I didn't care about the huge gaping plot holes and logic holes in the story and ate up every last bit of lazy story telling combined with the compelling visuals of what any Wolverine fan really wants to see which is, Logan doing what be does best and of course it isn't very pretty! There's no doubt in my mind that Wolverine fanboys will Love it all the same and eat it all up like candy just like I did!

A great read.
I bought this on a whim. I was an avid collector in my younger days in the late 60's, early 1970's. Then Marvel expanded beyond belief and, to my mind, the quality suffered. It come to a question of where my hard-earned pocket money should go. Sadly, comics lost out and life went on. Well, 40 years later, I have maybe 40 comics from the Silver Age and with the amazing movies, I'm in a position to revisit the universe of my childhood. Sad, huh? This collection takes place in the dystopian future. Wolverine and a self aware Hawkeye travel across the United States confronting a world where the villains of Marvel have organised and have virtually wiped out our Marvel Superheroes. The storytelling is sharp and the art is fantastic. I was riveted from the first page. Yes, it's violent. Much more than I expected, but that's just how life is, sometimes. It's poignant and as Wolverine's story unfolds, very sad. It's a brilliant tale. Highly recommended.

What TDKR was to Batman
Quick and simple: Old Man Logan is for Wolverine what The Dark Knight Returns was for Barman. The story is entirely self contained and requires relatively minimal background knowledge as a "entry fee." The only complaint I might have is that the end felt rushed, as if Millar had been itching to get to the admittedly incredible climax. If anything, this feeling of quickly being escorted to the end probably comes from the fact that you really won't want the story to stop. Characters feel dynamic and, in particular, the transitions from Wolverine to Logan and back to Wolverine are fluid and entirely believable (not to mention raise-your-fist-in-triumph awesome). And, going further, discovering why Logan is so bent on not fighting anymore has to be one of my all time favorite story lines. Combine all of this with Steve McNiven's incredible artwork and you have a masterpiece. I cannot recommend this enough. If Marvel has any brains they'll have this on their short list for future animated features.

Great story and incredible artwork!
I haven't been a regular comic book reader for over 20 years, but as my son and daughter started getting into comics I began taking them to conventions and picking up a few books here and there. I grabbed the TPB of Old Man Hawkeye for a couple bucks at one of the Cons, and got sucked into the story so much that I had to see where the story went from there. I thought Old Man Logan was a cool concept. Great art and writing. I couldn't put it down!

What a dark and deep story line. It starts slow but gets really exciting and dark soon! Can't wait to get next chapter!

This was a page turner and I didn't want it to end. It did and now i'm addicted to Mark Millar. Illustration is masterful and the storyline is human and solemn.
