## Description

We bring some different GPS modules here in Adafruit's store, but none that fulfilled our every wish - That's why we designed this little GPS unlock board. We believe this is the Ultimate GPS module, so we named it that. It's got everything you want and more: -sensitivity 165 dBm, 10Hz updates, 66 channels 5V design and only 20mA current draw Breadboard friendly + two mounting holes RTC battery-compatible Built-in datalogging Output PPS on fix Internal antenna patch + u.FL connector for external active antenna Difficulty LED status ... all for less than $40! The breakout is built around the MTK3339 chipset, a no-nonsense, high quality GPS module that can detect up to 22 satellites over 66 channels, has an excellent high sensitivity receiver (dB-165 tracking!) and a built-in antenna. It can do up to 10 position updates one second for detection, high sensitivity or high speed recording. Power usage is incredibly low, only 20mA when navigating. Best of all, we've added all the extra goodies you could want: an ultra-low dropout 3.3v regulator, so you can power it with 3.3-5VDC a, 5V level security inputs, enable pins so you can disable the module using any microcontroller pin or switch, a footprint for optional CR1220 coin cell to keep the RTC running and allow the hot hot boot hot hot and a Small Bright Red LED The LED flashes at about 1Hz while searching for satellites and flashes once every 15 seconds when an energy saving fix is found. If you want to have an LED on all the time, we also provide the correction signal out on a pin so you can put an external LED. Two features that really stand out on the MTK3339-based module version 3 is the external antenna functionality and the built-in data logging capability. The

Review: Nice GPS unit - I bought this little GPS for an on-line class and this little GPS works great! Even though I had to solder the header pins myself (this was my first soldering job on a semi-expensive (to me) breakout board. Was a little timid to do it but I got 'er done without smoking the internals and the board works great. I wish Adafruit would pre-solder these but I may need the skill later on... I was able to find some sample code to read, interpret and output in plain english what the GPS satellites are saying on the Adafruit website. I did purchase an external antenna as I could not pick up a signal in my basement, now I'm seeing 29 of them! Pretty snazzy and if I input the coordinates into a mapping program, there I am. Really looking forward to digging into this device in the class I'm taking and learning more about the GPS network. Nice device!
Review: Works a treat with Pi 4B - Setting up with Raspberry Pi 4B and DietPi with Tunerstudio for Speedometer of PiDash. VIN (GPS) to 3.3V on Pi, GND (GPS) to ground on Pi, RX (GPS) to TX on Pi, TX (GPS) to RX on Pi. Use DietPi-Config / option 4 : Advanced Options / Serial/UART to make sure ttyS0 console is off and ttyS0 (mini UART) device is on. I used CuteCom to set the baud to 115200 and refresh rate to 10Hz. Default GPS unit is 9600 baud and 1Hz. Start with CuteCom set to 9600 and send $PMTK251,115200*1F to change baud. Change CuteCom to 115200 baud and send $PMTK220,100*2F to change refresh to 10Hz. Make sure you have the battery backup installed in the GPS or else it will revert back when powered off. In Tunerstudio Beta (there was a problem with GPS which I don't know is fixed in the stable release yet) use Communications/ GPS Configuration to set up. See pic for details. I am using it with an external antenna so I can't comment on the internal one.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is there any way if I were to connect this to a raspberry pi and have it in my car, and my car was stolen, could I track it?**
A: Sure, if the raspberry pi is connected to internet, and your gps (Adafruit Ultimate GPS) is constantly reporting the location to somewhere (like a server). Now the solution you gotta come up is how you're going to connect the raspberry pi to internet, and keep the raspberry PI powered up.

**Q: Can the CR1220 battery work as a backup battery for RTC when 3.3V input is off? How long does the battery last with the 20mA consumption?**
A: Hi Gustavo, A typical CR1220 battery holds approximately 40mAh. The GPS should last approximately 90-120 minutes on the battery alone. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact us. Thanks again!

**Q: Does this come with an antenna**
A: No it doesn't come with an antenna. If you want to connect an antenna you will also need to purchase a u.fl to sma adapter cable to be able to use the gps with most standard antennas.

**Q: can this be a direct replacement for LS20031 gps??? im planning to replace a gps on my immersion rc EZOSD unit..LS20031 gps is much more expensive**
A: Yes, the GPSs both have the same data output sentences over UART according to the standards set by the National Marine Electronics Association

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works great. Fast acquisition.
*by R***T on February 1, 2019*

I built a dash cam using a raspberry pi and I’m using this GPS to show speed, coordinates and addresses and it’s been very accurate and reliable. I did add the backup battery. Adafruit has always delivered high quality goods at a very affordable price. The small footprint allows for a smaller enclosure.
