John Philip Sousa: At the Symphony, Vol. 2

I bought this CD to specifically get the "Songs of Faith, and Songs of Glory. All the tracks are very good. Enjoy if you like Sousa music.

Keith Brion did a brilliant job of transcribing and conduction this material. It establishes beyond doubt that Sousa was far more than just the March King. Among other things his sense of humor predominates. In his humoresque of Kern's "Look for the Silver Lining" he includes "There Is a Tavern in the Town" to thumb his nose at Prohibition. And the use of Model T klaxons is doubtless what inspired Gershwin to bring four squeeze-bulb horns back from France for performing his "An American in Paris", perhaps partly in appreciation of Sousa's humoresque on "Swanee". And the two throwaway marches, "Jack Tar" and "The Power and Glory", are delightful. So is everything else.

マーチ王スーザは多数の吹奏楽曲の他のオペレッタやワルツといったオーケストラ曲も手がけています。 今日では忘れられておりますが、このCDはそれらの管弦楽曲にスポットを当てた好企画です。 尚、マーチの管弦楽編曲版も収録されています。 さて、その作品ですが、オペレッタ『アイリッシュの竜騎兵』序曲で幕をあけるのですが、これがまた良い。 先人達(オッフェンバックやシュトラウス)の影響も見られますがスーザならではの繊細さが見られる佳曲です。 他の知られてない曲にも良質な作品があります。 吹奏楽と管弦楽の両方に精通していたスーザならではのCDと言えるでしょう。 演奏はラズモフスキー交響楽団、指揮はキース・ブライオン。 オケはスロヴァキア放送響のメンバー主体のオーケストラで、スカスカした弦に、鳴らない管と1990年代のナクソスでのスロヴァキア系演奏家のサウンドですが、ブライオンのタクトにはメリハリがあり、結構聴けます。 録音は悪くないです。 スーザが大好きなファン向きのCDだと言えるでしょう。
