It dulls the blade, can potentially damage other items in the dishwasher and, yes, can rust if not dried properly. **Q: Is the steel one solid piece or is the steel shown on the handles separate?** A: The stainless steel blade is referred to as full tang it is one continuous piece running from the hilt of the handle all the way to the end of the serrated blade.
