I was wrong! Only a couple teaspoonfuls of Belgian Choco Hazel got me. The problem must be caused by the main ingredient, the sweetener Maltitol, in two ways: 1) Maltitol causes water to be drawn into the gut, which can trigger diarrhea, and 2) Maltitol is not fully digestible so the undigested part ferments in the gut, producing gas. Whether you suffer from these effects depends on how much Maltitol you consume and how your individual system is affected by it. Belgian Choco Hazel must have a lot of Maltitol in it because it is the first ingredient listed, which means by weight it has more Maltitol in it than anything else. By comparison, Nutella's #1 ingredient is sugar, so because Maltitol is 90% as sweet as sugar, a lot of Maltitol would be needed to equal Nutella's level of sweetness. Why use so much Maltitol? It's cheap, especially compared to many other artificial sweeteners. It's made by hydrogenating low cost high-maltose corn syrup, converting it into a sugar alcohol (it's not booze, it's chemically known as a polyol). I'm afraid to eat any more of this stuff.
