I am thinking of trying as a storage system for watercolor half pans. Do these cases stack?

Depends how many. The cases have the length and width (approx 8x3) to fit a dollar or 2 just fine but if your going to make it rain at a club with a thousand 1's, it may not have the height (about an inch) to accommodate your needs . :-)

Its the same 8" x 3" x 1" listed in the description. The walls of the box are paper thin. FYI - this is the absolute cheapest quality metal and construction I've ever seen for this kind of product. Not worth the money, in my opinion.

Is it good for school

Probably, considering its nearly perfect size for pencils. The curved portions closest to the edge aren't quite long enough, but after some sharpening they should fit, or that space can be used for erasers.
