Seems utterly useless.** A: The back of these thermometers is black so it absorbs the infra red radiation from the water through the glass into the sensor of the thermometer. I have got one of these thermometers but I don't find them very accurate. Particularly the air temperature reading part. This reading is greatly influenced by the warm water in the aquarium. I prefer the cheaper thermometers that go in the water. **Q: Should it go more to the top or bottom of the glass please? Thanks x** A: I doesn't matter were it goes but I won't get it as when I had one it didn't hold its temperature after couple of weeks **Q: How does it work does some part go into the tank** A: It sticks on to the side of the tank.
