An essential resource for all serious Scrabble players. This major new edition is fully updated to include all valid words between 2 and 9 letters in length from the latest official Scrabble wordlist, and allows players to settle disputes over the eligibility of words. This book includes all playable words of two to nine letters in length, in one easy-to-follow straight alphabetical list. The short definitions, given for every main word listed, have been updated for this new edition, and allow players to check meanings of words without having to consult a second dictionary. Collins Scrabble dictionaries are endorsed by Mattel and are an essential reference for all Scrabble players. SCRABBLEโข is a registered trademark of J. W. Spear & Sons Ltd., a subsidiary of Mattel, Inc.ยฉ 2016 Mattel, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Review: Compact, Easy To Use and Fun for All - This compact Collins Scrabble Dictionary is a handy good-value word bible for all Scrabble lovers, both casual and hardcore. It contains all words up to 9 letters in length and fully replicates the official wordlist used in Scrabble tournaments (they do exist, they're great fun and most are open to everyone - see the ABSP website to learn more!) in the UK and international tournaments, including the World Championships. It's also used in the Scrabble app (not Words With Friends unfortunately). It is published by Collins, contains words inspired by other sources/publishers and also embraces the North American wordlist. It's easy to pick up, read and enjoy obscure findings, from Shakespearian and archaic terms to modern day internet favourites and wonderful words from international English. Although "living room players" may prefer to opt to their own dictionary, it's best to use this one as it's official and allows for a more fun and interesting game, and also makes way for new words which are being used in everyday life as well as old favourites. Language is evolving. Updated in 2015 (dictionaries get updated roughly every 4 years), you can surprise your opponents with some of the 4,000 + new words like HASHTAG, HANGRY, ZOWEE and RIDIC, which can of course be extended to RIDICULOUS. Words longer in 9-letters are voided so you don't have to worry about those, just looks out for possible extensions that hit the triple word squares. If you want the full word list you can buy a copy of Official Scrabble Words (a pure wordlist with no definitions) or Ultimate Scrabble Dictionary and Wordlist. Not only does it solve Scrabble squabbles wherever and whenever you play, it's also good for word learning and finding out what all the words mean. The unique thing about this dictionary is that all the definitions are very short but succinct and precise, so you don't have to waste time reading super-specific, exhausting and lengthy sentences. This makes the book highly accessible and easy to carry and understand. Here's an A - Z of some of my favourite words: ADENOID - of or relating to the gland. BARRIOS - Spanish-speaking corners in a town or city, especially in th US. CYMATIUM - top moulding of a classical cornice or entablature. DROSERA - insectivorous plant. ENTETE - obsessed. FUGUE - type of musical composition. GLUMPISH - glumpy. HEBDOMAD - number seven or a group of seven. IVRESSEN - drunkenness. JAROOL - Indian tree. KHEDA - enclosure used to capture wild elephants. LAZARET - small locker at the stern of a boat. MAWBOUND - (of cattle) constipated. NEUTRINO - elementary particle with no mass or electrical charge. OLIBANUM - frankincense. PHOEBE - greyish-brown North American flycatcher. QUAALUDE - methaqualine. RETIARII - gladiators armed with a net or trident. SHAKUDO - Japanese coin. TERCIOS - regiment of Spanish and Italian infancy. URBEX - short for urban exploration. VIRETOT - as in on the viretot - in a rush. WANDEROO - macaque monkey. XANTHAM - acacia gum. YIDAKI - long wooden musical instrument. ZELATRIX - nun who monitors the behaviour of younger nuns. Review: A Xmas present - Bought for my husband..we use it all the time.its great.

Handy word list
Only containing words up to 7 letters long, this is a purpose-compiled Scrabble dictionary. It has most of the quirky short words that are so useful in the game - together with their meanings. Handle carefully though as it is not particularly well bound.

Excellent value
It was a much thicker volume than I expected. My scrabble group were quite envious.

A must for Scrabble players
This is very useful. We already have the OSW word list, but that doesn't give definitions where as this one does. Just a short meaning which helps you to remember some of those many unusual words which come in handy to boost your score, XI for example and QI. If you enjoy Scrabble and want to avoid arguments about allowable words then do buy this.

More details required to choose a Scrabble dictionary
I have the hard copy of "the" Collins Scrabble Dictionary. The descriptions of all of these dictionaries in the Amazon listings are wholly inadequate to explain the many versions offered. This one only goes up to 9 letter words vs. 12 in the hard cover which also separates the 2 and 3 letter words so they are easier to find. This one is also a smaller book with smaller type. These are two very different books, which is impossible to know from the listings.
