Brilliant companion
I purchased this with the highest of confidence when studying my English Literature degree, as the author was one of my tutors who had a great passion for the genre, and having previously seen some of her work and the way that she delivered her ideas I knew this would be a great asset when writing my dissertation on the gothic. It offers enough to help those not familiar with the gothic literary genre and provokes those passionate enough about the subject to formulate new ideas. It gives you a clear timeline which you can use as the foundations to build your ideas. Even if you aren't using it academically, and have an interest in the genre, I would recommend this book!

I am studying a BA in English literature and I wanted a companion for the Norton Anthology of English Literature to provide my reading with more structure and a more straightforward view on Gothic Literature. This book does this and more. The information is presented in an easy to understand way while remaining thorough and extremely useful. The introduction and the cultural overview provide a strong background for learning, while presenting some basic information about the major players from the Gothic movement; Walpole Radcliffe, Lewis and Shelley are mentioned early on. But the most interesting part is ‘Text Writers and Contexts’, where the different sections track Gothic Literature from the 18th century to the late 20th century, and provide extended commentary of some of the works. Here you find not only the classics (Walpole, Shelley, Stevenson and Stoker), but also more modern Gothic authors like Stephen King, Ann Rice and Shirley Jackson. The last part of the book, called ‘Critical Theories and Debates’, provides information about narrative instability, female Gothic, Gothic bodies and Nation and empire, where some of the most important characteristics of the genre are analysed while providing multiple, in-depth examples from a variety of literary works. The content of this book is almost perfect for my particular needs, and for any undergraduate student that needs a quality companion book to guide their reading and provide some organisation to their study. The only downside I find is the editing itself. The book is printed in high-quality paper, but the font is rather big and the margins are very narrow. That means that there’s no space to add handwritten notes and comments, which is essential for this kind of studying aid. So, future editions would probably benefit from a redesign to provide it with more writing space, and maybe an aspect more similar to that of York Notes Advanced books. However, the presentation of the text is not a breaking point for me, and I completely recommend this companion.
