Hello Ed, Correct the hook to hook distance is 4 ft. 8 in. fully extended and 1 ft. 11 in. fully contracted and it doesn't extend more. Thank you.

Could the winch cable be replaced by a towing strap or a synthetic cable?

I'm not sure but I doubt it. I recommend not buying it. Mine broke the first time rhat I used it. Because I had it for six months and not used during that time. The cable pulled out of the reel. The company wouldn't replace it because it was six months old. I'd think twice before buying it. Scale 0 - 10 is a negative 10.

if my van weights 4000lb and im stuck in soft sand, will i be able to pull it out by strapping this to a 15ft heavy chain around a big tree?

Maybe. Trying to racket if stuck good is very difficult. High centered my Tacoma in snow and gave up trying to rachect using technique you described. Fortunately another Taco popped me right out.
