The tree grows throughout South America, is found mainly in Venezuela, Guyana and Brazil. Tonka in the language of the native Galibi of French Guiana means "bean" and the kumarú tree is botanically classified as legumes (Fabaceae). The tonka bean is black and looks like corrugated almond.
