They loop around the back of your ear and at the top, they go inside your ear just a bit, to help hold them on.The only nit is that they don't stay on very well, and that's why I've taken off a star. They tend to fall off my ears. If they had an internal wire, it would help.Additionally, although I am caucasian and run towards a pink complexion, these are rather pink in color -- pinker than I am. Not a big deal, just something to note.I think of myself as having large ears, FWIW. I'm not sure these would work for a kid at all.
