3.6v Ni-MH rechargeable battery 2,000 Ah --- can be replaced.

At maximum brightness the lantern gets ever-so-slightly warm but, when set for just a soft glow, it runs cool as a cucumber.

Is the housing metal or plastic?

The housing appears to be metal; probably aluminum; hard to tell without scraping some paint away. It could be some super hard PVC. However, when I tap my finger nail on it --- it sounds and feels like metal. At any rate, it is well made. The upper and lower housings have no seam --- so they had to be cast. You could go to the BALMUDA web site and ask them this question directly as they have their phone number listed and I am sure someone there could tell you for certain.
