An essential diagnostic tool for an engineer or mechanic, or scientist
Draper’s 54503 Mechanic’s Stethoscope will save time and money in locating that awkward-to-pin-down noise. For decades I’ve employed this type of stethoscope in a wide variety of mechanical and acoustic applications, including isolating unwanted noises on car engines and loudspeaker cabinets. With care and common sense this can be done safely near moving parts, such as in an engine.Having lent my trusty old faithful to someone who promptly emigrated with it, I needed another set to find out where the wind noise was coming from in my car. In this instance the solid probe and resonator were detached leaving the open tube.My passenger moved the open end of the tube around the various seals while I drove. Soon we found two problems and exactly where they were, and luckily it was an easy fix. This new Stethoscope paid for itself many times over in only ten minutes, simply by eliminating a visit to the car-dealer.Addendum Oct 2024I’ve now adjusted the shape and springiness, and put some old spare ear-bud grommets on the ear-ends for a gentler and more comfortable fit.

Cheap and effective
The build quality is ok and fine for this price point. The function and level of amplification is great. Two piece probe is useful for access. Happy with purchase and sure it will come in handy for various noises and under bonnet issues.

OK for diagnosing low noises on car.
As mentioned by another reviewer, very tight fitting onto your ears!

Stethoscope for engineers only
This works well for what it is intended for and it is useful for diagnosing sources of undue noise in computers. The instrument probe is a metal rod, which is non-detachable and comes with a screw on extension. You do have to be a bit careful not to penetrate moving parts, fans etc, of course, so look as well as listen. One problem I find is that the fit of the earpieces is uncomfortably tight to the point of being painful. I have tried adjusting them for a looser fit but it is not easy as the very strong u-shaped spring is very reluctant to stretch.

Good product
As an enthusiast for older cars It does what I need from a mechanic's stethoscope. It's well made and looks as though it should last with the sort of light use I'll be giving it.
