Rock solid coffee grinder.
Technivorm did again. They took the concept of grinding coffee stripped off all the bells and whistles of modern appliances and focused on building a really really good coffee grinder. Beans in and press the button, it's dead simple to use. The grind setting will accommodate drip coffee makers, french press and even percolators. Grinding for espresso machines isn't a thing in the Technivorm universe though and if this is what you're looking for then check out the Baratza and Breville grinders. The KM5 is reasonably quiet. I say this because my previous coffee grinder was blade grinder that would wake up the entire house. The sound on the KM5 has a much lower pitch that doesn't shatter nerves. The grind quality is very consistent due to the flat steel burrs and the bean hopper holds enough beans to get me through a week of morning coffee. Build quality is excellent. The case is all metal and is surprisingly heavy coming in at 10 lbs. There's a bit of a static issue with the grounds but this issue can be resolved with a couple of drops of water over the beans in the hopper. If you want to get fancy you can get a water mister and give the beans a quick spritz and stir and that will stop the static in its tracks. (This trick works most other grinders too.)One one last thing I would comment on is the lack of color options. It would have been nice if Technivorm had the same color options as their coffee brewers. I have a Moccamaster KBGV that's midnight blue and my grinder is the most unexciting shade of white. My OCD self will be grinding on this issue every time I enter the kitchen. But then again this is actually a good problem to have. I could be drinking out of a Keurig.

Don’t let the brand fool you, it a piece of junk.
I purchased this for my son and his wife after buying them a Moccamaster coffee maker, the coffee maker is excellent but this grinder is a piece of engineering design that should be thrown in the dumpster. The issue is the same as everyone else said, keeps blocking itself up and then requires cleaning even after just one use if it can even make it to the end of that grind. Moccamaster really needs to make this right, for people who bought an obviously defective product.

Love it
Sept 2024 - I just ordered this grinder from Amazon last week and have only been using it for about 4 days now - however I really like it. I had been using the Fellow Ode grinder for last couple years - which a friend had given me. It worked fine - liked the design, was fairly quiet however it had many things I didn't like about it.Moving to this new grinder is like night and day - some of the benefits over my old grinder:1. Match my moccamaster brewer - so they are cohesive.2. Much larger hopper that has enough weight from the beans to ensure the fall down into the grinder without always having to be pushed like my older grinder3. About the same noise level - maybe a little louder but not much4. Solid build - high quality feel to it5. best of all - super clean output - my old grinder did not have a good seal between the grinder shoot and the container so my counter top was always getting coffee grounds on it - hated that! This grinder has a nice tight seal between the rubber container top and the chute - so you don't get all kinds of debris flying everywhere making for a messy counter - zero debris = clean counter top!My old grinder had an auto stop feature - but this grinder requires you to keep pressing the power button to grind - that's fine with me - I kind of enjoy watching the grounds filling the container especially at the high rate this machine grinds. The grounds are all very uniform also - very consistent.

unmatched quality and precision
Considering person preference varies, Some are more purist and desire the most consistent grind and the size and power of the grinding motor ranked at the top. Others prefer all the bells and whistles and convenience above all else. Given there isn't a "perfect" grinder, you should consider exactly what you want out of a grinder and rank accordingly. For me, this is a near perfect grinder and think the solidness, precision, and power rating of the motor paramount. This is also what I searched for when I chose an expresso grinder by choosing Rancillio Rocky grinder. Both have brought me much brewing pleasure when my beverage is enjoyed. Additionally, there really isn't a combo grinder that does coffee great and espresso great. They are targeted at 2 completely different grinds and dual use never really works out without sacrifice. Yes, I have to hold the on switch for the 28 seconds it takes to brew my 28 oz. of coffee each morning, not a big deal. I have a digital timer to count which would be more precise than some half baked rotation time wheel my last coffee grinder had. I also use this as a shot timer for my espresso, so if a consistent flavor is desired, this is the only way to go short of using a scale. For the record, I have never had static and totally love the fact that the baroscopic glass is used over plastic, I will take that any day. I do love this grinder and would purchase it all over again and it does compliment my Macmaster brewer. Everything in my coffee/espresso collection is the same stainless look so just icing on the cake.

This Coffee Grinder is NOT the one for you!
Unfortunately, the quality of this Moccamaster Burr Coffee grinder does not come close to the quality of Moccamaster's coffee maker. When I received this coffee grinder, it was heavy and appeared to be well made...wrong! Owned for just one week, loaded the hopper with it's FIRST batch of fresh coffee beans, within less than a minute, it locked up, cleared the beans, unscrewed the hopper, no luck. So I re-boxed the grinder and returned to the seller at my cost. Seller rep received and instead of accepting the locked grinder, they blamed me and said that the grinder had what appeared to be "dirt" in the grinder that indicated to them that the grinder showed signs of "previous use". I only owned it a week! If it showed signs of previous use, then I was sold a previously used grinder! I appealed, but no luck. Received 50% of what I paid ($300), only $150 on the return and shipping for me was $37 UPS, so in the end, lost cause. Going with a blade grinder instead. Moccamaster needs to go back to the drawing board...

It stopped grinding but I fixed it
The grinder works well. It didn’t have the label with the numbers for the settingsBut I figured it out. The first time I used the machine I filled the container up and started it up. I didn’t realize that the glass cup only holds about half before it starts backing up into the machine. So when I went to grind another batch of beans it didn’t start. After a while I used a nylon pipe cleaner and pushed it up in the part that discharges the ground coffee and I was floored at how much was stuck up there. Anyway once it was clear it worked. Now I use the pipe cleaner after every grind to get the excess out and it works fine. I use a little nylon cooking brush to get all of the grounds out of the glass jar with ease.I have the coffee pot as well and it is by far the best coffee I have ever made.I give the grinder a 4 because of the fact it doesn’t discharge all of the grounds…it is usually about a tablespoon of waste.

Absolutely worth it!
Awesome grinder! I had a conical burr grinder, not a super expensive one but a good one. I researched conical vs flat grinders and you can see the consistency of the grind with the flat grinder. The taste you get from the beans is better. Leave the setting at 5.5 that it ships with, that's recommended for the Moccamaster coffee maker but it's a good start if you have a different kind of coffee maker. Did my research on Moccamaster and read reviews and decided on this setup. I'm very happy with the grinder and it comes with a 5 year manufacturer warranty. The lid seals great on the hopper and the container for the grinds has 2 lids, 1 for grinding and 1 for storing leftover grinds. Myself, I weigh my beans before grinding so nothing is left behind in the hopper, I use different beans for the mornings and the nights. It's noise level isn't much louder than my previous grinder, besides ,it's grinding. It's quality, consistency and warranty is worth the price.

Great grinder but sooooo messy to use. I had to send it back
TL:DR Summary - This Technivorm KM5 makes great coffee. As a pure coffee grinder it will be hard to beat. As a user experience it's a different story. The coffee goes everywhere. The rubber cap that seals the grinder to the receiver gets coated with coffee grinds which then scatter around the kitchen and the glass container doesn't release all the coffee either. I like the look, I like the warranty and build quality and I loved the coffee but it was impossible to clean and was too messy to keep. I returned it. Shame but I can't recommend. The Good - The design follows the Technivorm aesthetic. It is a tall and imposing kitchen gadget especially with the large hopper on the top. The grinder comes preset for Technivorm filter coffee makers and is easy to use. Finer grinds are lower numbers (1), coarser grinds are higher numbers (up to 10). The quality of the grind is very good. It certainly makes a difference to your daily coffee. The Indifferent - The grind adjustment dial is stepless which is a good thing but rather small. Resetting it accurately will be quite hard since the position indicator is also small and black so it doesn't stand out from the dial itself. dab of white paint on the indicator would make this better. The grinder is also quite noisy and slow. The stop start button isn't a "one touch" button, you have to press it continuously until the grind finishes. It is also placed a bit awkwardly at the base of the machine. These are minor niggles but potential areas for improvement. The Bad - The hopper is too large and the slopes inside which feed coffee beans into the burrs are too shallow. This helps make it a slow device. The cover for the burr chamber doesn't really work meaning coffee beans and fragments of coffee beans can jump out of the chamber. Those fragments eventually can coat the inside of the hopper. The hopper is also too large with a 250g capacity. This means using this as a one shot device means the amount of coffee you add to the hopper is too small for efficient grinding speeds. It is very messy. It is supposed to have de-ionisation technology to keep the grinds going in the right places. This doesn't work very well. When grinding coffee grinds can coat the sealing lips on the rubber cap to the receiver. When you open the receiver to get at your coffee this sealing mechanism scatters coffee grinds every where. Grinds can also escape from the grinder chute onto the top of the sealing cap. The receiver is glass without a spout to pour coffee grinds into your coffee maker. Because the de-ioniser is ineffective coffee grinds spread all over the glass receiver and stick to the walls of it. This means getting all your coffee out of the receiver is nigh-on impossible. You can mitigate some of this by using the "water-spray" method where you spray the unground beans with a fine mist of water. This certainly helps but doesn't cure the problem. Additionally, using the spray method means that the inside of the hopper gets wet and the fragments which escape from the burr chamber then stick to the inside of the hopper. Not a good thing. Conclusions - I really wanted to like this coffee grinder. I like the look. The Technivorm style is distinctive but it has imposed some limitations on the design. The grind size dial is small because it has to fit under the hopper. The start stop button placement is fine until you realise you have to push it for 20 - 30 seconds to get all the coffee ground. This could so eaily be a one-push to grind button which would be easier to use. The hopper at 8.8oz is too large for most people. It might be sized for an office where you'll go through coffee quickly but for home users it's too big. This is especially galling since the ground receiver is sized for 100g. You shouldn't leave coffee beans in a clear plastic, unsealed container for too long. The hopper can also trap coffee beans in void where it screws onto the grinder.Technivorm say that this has de-ioniser technology to stop coffee grounds flying around. It works to a point but what it means is that the grounds stick to the receiver sealing cap. When you remove this cap the coffee grounds go everywhere. The grounds are sufficiently ionised enough to stick to the receiver too. They could at least give you a brush to clean the grounds out of the receiver. This needs real work as the mess created is the primary reason I returned it. The grinder also seems to retain a lot of coffee within the mechanism which makes it difficult to clean out the burrs too. This is a great grinder. The coffee it makes is a real step up from any blade grinder and is, possibly, even better than the Fellow Ode Gen 2. But, but it is so messy and compromised in use that I can't recommend it. It is virtually the same price as the Fellow Ode 2 which is quieter, quicker and less messy and also a great coffee grinder. With such a strong competitor at the same price I can't recommend the Technivorm KM5 and so I returned it and bough (and kept) the Fellow. Unless you absolutely have to have the Technivorm aesthetic there are better alternatives. Some things they can fix easily (a dab of white paint on the grind selector) but the design needs a rethink. Perhaps the KM5 Gen 2 will be the grinder I really want.
