How do i know when i need to replace the thermicon tips?

My understanding is that the thin wire at the thermicon tip may break. I changed mine, not because the wire was broken, but because I had used the same tip for years, and wondered if its age may affect its use.

Does this include the blade or just the wired version of the tip?
