BUT . . . . - Believe it or not I had a fire under the hood just a few weeks ago (the only one I have had in 50 years!). It occurred when I was about 50 feet from home. Shortly after, I saw this item at a great price, and ordered. I even installed it myself. Peel and stick. In the event of a fire under the hood, the fire retardant is activated by temperature, and sprays. I do not expect super powers from this little item, just some help should I need it! It it the kind of thing you hope never to have to use, but I am much more comfortable knowing it is there. A car fire was the last thing I thought of, and I was extremely lucky. I want to bypass the luck and go straight to HELP and SAFETY. I would recommend this item to anyone. It would make a great gift for anyone under any circumstances, especially a child or other loved one; one less thing to have to worry about. There are two variations of the compound, one that uses potassium nitrate and one that uses strontium nitrate. Annoyingly, the leaflet included with the device mentions both, in text that looks as if it had been lifted from Wikipedia, so there is no clue as to which is used. The Wikipedia article says that potassium nitrate compounds "produce a corrosive by-product that may damage electronic equipment, although later generations lower the effect." The leaflet does say, and this is reinforced by the Wikipedia article, that CAFE devices work best in an enclosed environment. My planned use was for my 3D printers, but unless I mounted this inside the chamber, it might not do any good. I do see that the Wikipedia article says that CAFE devices can work when directed towards the tops of the flames, which may work in my case. The device can be mounted to a flat, smooth surface using the 3M adhesive tape preinstalled on the back, or one could use the two zip-ties included in the box. It is marketed as designed for fire control in an engine compartment; however, it also notes that it will work in any enclosed or semi-enclosed small area. I got this device to give to my son for his 3D printer enclosure. He runs his printer A LOT, which makes me nervous so I guess I did this for my own peace of mind. This clever and compact system has a large 3M adhesive plate covering the entire back. So, the first and easiest mounting option is to adhere the box to a smooth, clean and flat surface above/near the area of concern. The system also has two fold-out plastic tabs with a hole in each. These can be used to screw it into a surface where the sticker might not work or for extra security. The third mounting option is to use the two included high-temp zip ties, inserting them through the tab holes and around some pole or other feature near the protection area. Wherever it's mounted, it needs to be relatively clear all around it so that any fire or extreme heat will reach its tiny side-mounted sensors and so as not to block the suppressant dispersion holes on either side of the box. My son plans to mount this device on the inside wall of his 3D printer enclosure using the 3M mount. I'll update my photos with a shot of this install as soon as possible. Obviously, I'm hoping this thing is never needed...better safe than sorry. I should note that the directions that come with this device are printed in microscopic lettering and only moderately useful.
