Seagate 8TB Expansion Desktop Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STKP8000400)

I use a large external hard drive for two purposes: ordinary backup and to keep my very large ripped CD collection of music for which my main computer disc simply doesn't have room. The large size allows backups with multiple versions so I can go back in time if I need to. Belts and braces, an old school idea. My previous drive died suddenly and this was the best cost/size value I could find from a reputable vendor. In the past, I have had trouble with Seagate drives on my various Mac's, but this one worked immediately without a single problem. It is now handling all the relevant backups (there are several including some cloud stuff) and my music. It is quiet and, so far as I can tell, faster than the drive it replaced. It also seems to be interfering far less in other devices and their operations than the old drive did. That may be, however, because the old drive was complaining about being ill before it died completely and this new one is just being "normally" competent. I gave it 5 stars because it is doing what it is supposed to do without causing any trouble. Assuming it doesn't die a week from now, then it was a good buy. Do remember to reformat away from exFAT before using it on a Mac.

This 28tb drive showed read-only access one day, on the next it made repeated clicking and then would not even spin up. It was on surge protection. Never fell or was tipped over. Checked power adapter and it was ok. So if you need RELIABLE (more than one year storage) look elsewhere. As to warranty service a claim was filed and i did receive a response back from Seagate. UPDATE : Seagate replaced the drive. So it is worth your time to contact their customer service and follow the RMA process. I did not encounter any problems with their customer service.

I have several smaller hard drives I use to store photos and old files but they are getting old and it is hard to organize files, especially photos across several drives so I was in the market for a large hard drive to better organize my old files. I opted for the Seagate 22TB drive because of its' size and, for the size of the drive, it was relatively inexpensive compared to other options. Things I like about the drive: 1) It has a large capacity but is relatively small compared to my other external drives; 2) it is plug and play. I have some drives my system has a hard time identifying sometimes but there are no issues with this drive; 3) everything works out of the box. I have had no issues so far; 4) I use it on 3 systems and it works well on all 3 systems and is easy to move from one to the other. It is not my fastest drive. have a portable Sandisk SSD that is faster but it has not been a problem. You can hear it working but it is not annoying. Overall I am very pleased with the Seagate Drive.

Hot garbage! Yeah sure it was cheaper and had more storage space than the competitors but I should’ve just bought other brands. Less than a month it just stopped working and started beeping….meaning hardware failure. Customer service is all bots then “human” via chat. I would be better off just burning my device to get anything. Slow to respond asking questions I literally told the answers in the initial what is wrong today. Asked if dropped recently. Ok if that’s your go to question maybe make it so it doesn’t stop working if it was bumped or dropped once. Other brands don’t seem to have that issue maybe put in better casing. Just a thought. I will send away and hope for the best and see what I get 30-45 business days from the day they receive. Update 1: When I setup the recovery I was given a choice to receive a hard drive with any recovered data (size of hard drive matches size of the recovered data) and either a replacement hard drive of one you purchased or the guts of your old drive which will cost you import fee and not have the casing. So far I have an update that they received my device but so far haven’t started to scan to recover data. I received my replacement hard drive that didn’t come in a box as if sold in the store and the outside of the box said refurbished. So basically you pay for full price new item it crashes you may get your data recovered or not but get a refurbished item replacement which typically costs less. I tried to return refurbished one because I paid full price for a new one and they said because it’s over 30 days (only because it took awhile for them to mail me my replacement so over 30 days maybe by a week or two) they won’t accept return per Amazon policy and take it up with the manufacturer directly…which I will but after I see if they recover any data I wouldn’t want to tempt them to “attempt and not be able to recover anything “…this is frustrating… Update 2: Got notice about 60 days or so after sending away the device that no data was recovered…shocking I know. It gets worse so I was able to start piecing my life back together slowly using recovery software on my other hard drives to recover some of the data I had moved to this product and then boom the replacement (a refurbished product) boom just crashed and died. This now is the third Seagate device I owned that crashed and died in my life, never had WD crash. I am asking for a refund from customer service at the Seagate and got asked to show proof of purchase and said I was eligible for refund and that they were processing it to then quickly say to rebuild your confidence in our product can I interest you in a new build? Apparently it’s sorry for your frustration twice but hey give us another chance to prove you right about us….I asked to talk to the supervisor as maybe they have authority for a refund and got the same run around. Ugh!!! So now gotta send it away to get a replacement that probably will die again. Take it from me don’t buy it!!

This is my fifth one, and I can say with confidence that Seagate builds reliable hardware — but there are a few important things every buyer should know before trusting one with their data. An APC unit is a modest investment that can save you from devastating and costly data loss. Beyond that critical caveat, this drive has been rock-solid. The 8TB capacity makes it ideal for archival storage and long-term backups. In my video production work, I rely on SSDs for read/write-intensive tasks, but this Seagate handles computer backups and file archiving beautifully. Setup couldn't be simpler: plug it into a surge protector (or ideally an APC), connect via USB, and you're running. Depending on your operating system and intended use, you may want to reformat the drive to NTFS or FAT32 — worth a quick look before you start loading it up. Despite the word "portable" on the label, treat this drive gently. Spinning drives are not designed for frequent movement or rough handling — jolts and drops are their enemy. The enclosure is a plain black plastic shell, purely functional with no frills. That's fine — this is a workhorse storage device, not a fashion accessory, and it's compatible with virtually any consumer computer. Reliable, spacious, and affordable per terabyte — just protect it with battery backup and handle it with care.

Large size DataSafe! I have 3 of these (Two from Amazon, one from a brick and mortar) in the 22TB form for data backup, which seems to be what they're designed to be. A piece of advice from a data hoarder: Always have 3 backups of your data, one offsite. I have ~20TB of media and other data that I need to keep safe and purchased these before the price went crazy. Two I have on site and keep them up to date, backing up monthly or if there's a big change, and the other one I update bi-annually that lives in a safety deposit box at the bank and rotate every six months. To me, the data I have is priceless. If the price comes down I'll definitely buy another one in a size or two larger just because losing all my data gives me the heebie jeebies, it gives room to grow, and I'd just put that one away long term. These drives, to me, seem to be designed as somewhere you put your important data, put the drive back in the box, and only open it again when you're backing up, or when the unthinkable happens and you need to rebuild a hefty NAS, and for that, they're phenomenal. It doesn't seem to be designed as a constant use drive as some here are using it for. Unit comes with a somewhat cheesy USB to MicroB, which is... short but adequate. Buy one of the near bulletproof braided metal covered cables and toss that into the box for long term storage and forget about it. Additionally it has power adaptors for just about every possible and unpossible power solution, so if you need to take a backup to shores unknown, from downtown Anyplace Earth, you can set it up anywhere, do your file transfer, put it back in the box, and be happy. This hard drive works great and holds a huge amount of data. Setup was easy, and it was recognized right away by my computer. It's been reliable so far and gives me plenty of room for photos, videos, and backups. Very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone needing extra storage.

I have always had great results with Seagate Expansion drives and this did not disappoint. With 8 TB of storage I can now back up everything! I have this connected to my Mini PC and the storage and transfer rate is great. Very Easy to connect and use,
