Can aa fit in the aaa slots?

If forced probably, but there are slots for both; no need to force aa into a aaa slot

Do the batteries stay in place when you carry it by the handle?

I haven’t actually tried to carry it by the handle, but I think it probably will in that the batteries are in the little holes pretty tight anyway. I enjoy this organizer a lot.

Ad says for rechargeable batteries for some reason. I expect these will work for non-rechargeable batteries as well?

Yes, it will hold rechargeable and non- rechargeable batteries as long the battery size is AA or AAA. Be sure your non-rechargeable batteries are Alkaline type, otherwise are going to leak if you store them for a long period of time.
