Mattress clips comes to mind. They’re a bit of a nuisance, at least I think so. We took a few off months ago, because they kept falling off.

What is the width of the metal side bars?

1 and 1/8 in. FYI, I have had this bedframe for just under 2 months and I have experienced no problems whatsoever. It feels very sturdy and strong and so far so good 😀

How much weight can a queen hold?

I'm about 250 and it has held up great, once I laid on it. Everything locked into place. It's a very sturdy frame. Well worth the money

If I wanted to use my box spring with this, could I? (I know it isn’t required)

I wouldn't recommend it. The frame is 14 inches tall. If you add a box spring, and then a mattress, you'll be sitting sky high. We have a good quality mattress that is approximately 10 inches deep, so the "seat" height is comfortable, but I wouldn't want it any higher.
