DS220J memory is fixed at 512 MB. Current software upgrade requires a minimum of 1 GB according to Synology's own notes. Avoid this model/brand. **Q: what physical size harddrives can be used?** A: The hard drive "size" is not the physical size of the drive itself but the diameter of the platter inside the drive. A standard desktop HDD is 5.75" x 4" but has a 3.5" platter inside. Hence the name 3.5" drive even though it is physically much bigger. A notebook HDD measures 4" x 2.75" and referred to as a 2.5" drive. **Q: If single drive is installed initially, then 2nd drive is added later. does raid 1 get configured? or does both drive need to be installed together?** A: I installed one drive initially, and then added a second drive later. The second drive was automatically added as a Raid 1 drive. **Q: Can it be used as a datastore for esxi or backup VMs?** A: Technically you can but not recommended. You will likely get terrible performance because the CPU and memory is not designed for this use case. 512MB RAM is very low for a datastore. This model is really geared towards traditional file sharing and media streaming.
