Can the botanical basket be fitted in this model?

Yes they can but i put botanicles straight in the still you get better flavour and it doesnt scortch

Do I need to buy anything else with this or does it work straight out of the box?

You need a brewing bin capable of holding 40 litres. Bigger is better up to the 50 ltr mark. You will also need a syphon tube. Other than that and assuming you have suitable bottles to put the alcohol in - it’s all good - although the supplied filtration unit takes forever so I am thinking of getting a different one of those.

Can you add different mashes or does it have to be sugar mash?

I’ve distilled beer, wine and all sorts of other things. Throw away the first output and it’s a good way to recycle abortive wine brews. I’ve also made gin and ouzo by adding the relevant botanicals/ingredients directly to the machine and finalized mash. My answer would be experiment but be safe and throw away the first outputs. Filter everything well at the end.
