I wanted sometthing that was more focused on the need to win a gunfight that started from a defensive position and probably unexpected direction.I think this is an area where (as a civilian) it's critical to do a few things well (with a very low probability of error) without the need for constant training. It also helps as a review before going to the range to avoid wasting rounds and further learning bad habits. To those with no experience the book is a step too far down the path. For those who live or work in an environment where firearms proficiency needs to be devleoped to and maintained at a very high level the book is probably too basic. However, for the other 80% of the population the book is a treasure. I own several more advanced books but this is the book I need to keep on the table to periodically review.I think it is a very good prelude to professional instruction , either at the entry level or recurrent instruction and fine tuning or learning more advanced concepts.It is unfortunate that law abiding citizens need to have as much protections as is demanded by today's threats.Finally the book's emphasis on safety is very presented with a view to the real world. I'm stunned at some of the things I see at they pistol range in the evenings.Not perfect, but Highly recommended, (I think for some reviewers perfection is only found in the mirror) ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fundamentals *by J***K on Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2012* Disclaimer: this is the only book of this kind that I've read, so my basis for comparison is limited.Great fundamental presented by a guy who has been there. There are lots of guys who teach, but not so many that have actually been in real combat situations with real people shooting back. That makes all the difference to me.The photos are excellent and there are lots of them. Photos are much more effective than excessive narrative when teaching technique (i.e. how to hold the pistol, body alignment, etc). I'm learning a lot from the book. I might prefer more of an emphasis on basic shooting fundamentals vs. techniques covering, for example, shooting weak-handed while wounded, but maybe that's not the intended scope this book. But don't get me wrong, the fundamentals are covered.I definitely recommend the book and I'm glad I bought it. I'd do it again. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent Starting Point *by K***P on Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2013* I actually looked at this on loan from a library first, then purchased. Great price. I refer to this all the time as I work on building my skills. Lots of illustrations and written so that it is very easy to understand and put into practice. If you're just staring out like I am, this book is great. I could see a more advanced shooter being less impressed, unless they wanted a back to basics review. Drills are good to improve skills. I'm using this to develop my skills and then decide if I want to pursue IDPA.
