I wish they would release Primal Roots on CD in the US the import copies are too pricey Review: A Soulful and Disco Mendes collection. - These albums were released in Brasil under different names and covers, both being released by Brazilian record company Som Livre (one of the biggest here in the country, together with Universal Music, Warner Bros., EMI Music and Sony Music Entertainment). "Sergio Mendes" was released as "I Believe", and this album features the Brazilian hit "If I Ever Lose This Heaven", theme from Brazilian telenovela (soap opera that lasts between 6 and 8 months) 'Cuca Legal' (Good Mind). "Magic Lady" features the homonymous song, theme from another Brazilian telenovela, 'Os Gigantes' (The Giants) - curiously the same TV show had another song of Mendes in the opening credits - "Horizonte Aberto" (Open Horizon - from his album "Alegria", released by Elektra in 1980, and by Som Livre one year before, with the homonymous name of the song and another cover). It is a tradition that Brazilian telenovelas releases two soundtracks with the featured songs: The first one with songs in Portuguese (The "National" soundtrack) and the second one with non-Portuguese hit songs (The "International" one). These albums reflect two moments of Mendes: One in a Soul way, covering Stevie Wonder and recording other soul artists - except for George Harrison; The second one is a disco groove. The only one with a latin groove is "Magic Lady", one of my favorites of the second album. Besides "If I Ever Lose This Heaven", I loved "All In Love Is Fair". The arrangements are fantastic, the singers too. Maybe it is not sophisticated as it was in those times of Brasil '66, and not so Brazilian-rhythmic as "Alegria", but the sound pleased me a lot. If you're looking for bossa nova, jazz and lounge sophistication, please run after early albums of Mendes.
