Suggest a "Large". Medium might not be long enough in the leg. There is a tie for the waist if a "Large" is a little loose in the waist.

I am also 5’9”. I weigh 160lbs with a 32“ waist. I purchased a size Medium in every color. Fits me well and I have a little room. If you are someone who likes their clothes a bit more loose go for the large. Hope this helped.
