Good Scanner

I have good experience with previous Brother products, and this scanner, fortunately, was no exception. Decent quality of scanned documents, good scan speed, easy setup (macOS Catalina), and intuitive operation.

I bought this specifically to archive mail and past receipts. Its very small and scans paperwork quickly which is great. It also scans longer documents- legal and lengthy receipts have been no problem. The software is functional but very annoying to use. I'd highly recommend increasing the default contrast to a higher number- maybe something like 79; and then scanning in greyscale. I'd also recommend enabling multi-page scanning and setting the timeout value to something smaller like 10 seconds. This allows you to easily feed in the first page of a document and then hit scan, once the first page finishes (no earlier!) add in the second page. It will add the next page to the document perfectly. I would also recommend saving it directly to PDF in a directory of your choosing. As a hint, be sure to have the input and ouput sides of the scanner clear- if it gets gummed up at all it will cause odd stretch artifacts in the document. Similarly, if you feed in a second page before the first page fully stops, it will treat the two pages as one large page which you don't want. Also be sure to set the rail that guides the paper in for each document, otherwise the paper will get crooked and the scan will not turn out well. Comparing this to other scanners- I would only use this for documents & receipts. I would not scan pictures with this. For that I have another scanner- a Canon CanoScan 900F MkII. That scanner scans pictures very well. It also scans documents well, producing filesizes smaller than the output of this Brother scanner, but it takes MUCH longer to process and scan. I also shopped the other brother scanners. I picked this one because I wanted duplex capability which saves a lot of time. Unfortunately the only way to enable/disable duplex is via the settings menu. I wish there were two buttons to scan "duplex scan" and "normal scan". Even though I wish it was easier to use, the duplex capability is still great. The wifi model didn't seem attractive- I didn't like how you would have reduced ability to control settings and also I didn't like how you are unable to connect the scanner via USB as a normal TWAIN device (it forces you to scan to a SD card if you don't want to use wifi). So overall + Fast + Multi page & double sided scanning works well + Fair price - Image processing in SW is clunky / not as strong as competition - Duplex mode is annoying to enable and disable - Some settings are hard to find in software

I've been using sheetfed scanners for many years (since the earlier Visioneer/Paperport models) and this has been the best one yet. In fact, after using it for 3 years, I don't really see a reason to replace it like I have others. I had the previous Brother model with was nice but still had room for improvement. The design of this scanner is a major improvement over any previous sheetfed scanner I've had. Specifically, the cleaning is SO much easier. I haven't had to clean it as often as others, but when I do it is incredibly easy. Just tilt the top piece open and you have clear access to rollers and scanning service! Compared to having to remove shell pieces, lifting up rollers and shoving a cotton swab into and dragging it from side to side, this designed was reason enough to upgrade. As for the rest of it, I don't really have much to complain about. Double sided scanning works well and is definitely a time saver, and the quality of the scanning is good (I scan documents only, no photos). I also like the compact size and the straight paper path. During scanning some times it will cut off a part of the document if it has a very dark color along the lead or trailing edge (common with these scanners) even while scanning in color, and when scanning in grayscale it seems almost impossible to get a scan where the white is actually white. It seems to scan in very low contrast even if I boost the contrast in settings. I have found it easier to scan first in color and then convert to grayscale afterwards (the scanning speeds it he same for color/grayscale).
