So when the remote is in use, the child cannot control it right? But when the remote is not in use, the child can, correct? Or how does that work?

The remote will try to override the control command to the car, but if you are trying to go forward and they put it in reverse the commands will cancel and the car won't move. The only true overrides are limiting the top speed and putting it in 'park brake' mode where it will not move. Your kid can be driving and you can try to steer to have them avoid an obstacle, however if they can overpower the little steering motor then you will not be able to control it.

How do i get the controller to streer? The steering motor works if i apply power but not with the controller. All other controlls work great.

You may need to sync up the remote by holding the center button.

How much weight can this kit handle?

I guess it would depend on the size of the car. the gears seem to be of good quality and may handle be bigger load. You may want to pare up the batteries.

Could this work with a 6v battery?

I have used it for 6, 12 and 18v with no issues.
