I am a retired Marine Merchant Captain. I used to run off-shore charters out of the Destin, Florida. I know what the importance of a sharp knife means in many ways on and off the water. I used a whet stone for many years, and it took time depending on the use of the knife. I tried several sharpners and had to send them back, because they didn't get the job done. I tried one more time to get the sharpner that was quick and no chore. FINALLY I found the best sharpner without a doubt. I did my homework and did a lot of research to find a sharpner I wouldn't return for not doing the job. The Grihot VN3 Professional Knife Sharpner did all that was described. After fighting with dull knives for years and only using a typical steel sharpening rod / honing steel, I decided to give this a try given the very positive reviews (and the Black Friday sale price!). I first started with a couple of paring knifes that we use to cut citrus when making drinks and which essentially wouldn't cut through a lemon or lime skin without first poking the tip through the skin first and then cutting with the blade. The first test was only slightly successful but I figured it might be just learning how to use this properly. When I used this sharpener the second time my technique clearly improved and it cut through the citrus skin without issue. For those have commented that it doesn't work or doesn't do anything to the knives, work on your technique! Today I sharpened ~20 knives in about 30 minutes and you can see from the attached photo that indeed it has a clear effect of removing metal as necessary! (Again, that is roughly 20 knives worth of metal detritus, including a half-dozen serrated knives which other sharpeners do not do.) There may be other ways to sharpen knives better, but for a nice stylish product, heavy and well built, that can quickly and easily get the job done in less than a minute, this is well worth the cost!

I can count on one hand—maybe two fingers—how many product reviews I've written in my life, but this sharpener absolutely deserves one. I've owned my Grihot Knife Sharpener for almost two years now, and it has been an absolute beast from day one. While purists shun products like this, I find it to be adequate for my needs. It works best to keep my already sharp knives honed. I hone after every use of a knife, so they don't get a chance to get dull. I am miserable at using a stone, always have been, and this pull through all but takes skill out of the picture. Granted, it will not get a knife as razor sharp as a stone system, but with this sharpener I keep my knives sharp enough to cut even soft fruits and veggies without hardly any force, eliminating the squish factor.

This device is totally awesome. 3 times through and it is sharp.

Just got my knife sharpener. It looks nice sitting on the counter, which makes it much easier to use every time I need to sharpen a knife. So far the knives I have sharpened have turned out very well. I am very happy with my purchase. It was worth a little extra money than my last knife sharpener

I RARELY WRITE A REVIEW (WITHOUT BEING ASKED). THIS KNIFE SHARPENER IS THE BEST! I CAN’T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THE QUALITY. IT SHARPENS MY KNIVES BETTER THAN WHEN MY HUSBAND USED TO SHARPEN THEM WITH A STONE. EVEN MY SMALLER KNIVES THAT WERE HARD TO SHARPEN ARE A BREEZE WITH THIS. WELL WORTH THE MONEY. I believe this may be my first review ever of a product. I use Wusthof Classic knives and some brand of steak knives that are not serrated. I have always used Chef's Choice electric sharpeners and have no complaints with them. I gave my daughter my parents TV Bavarian edge black diamond knife sharpener after they passed. I had used it several times when visiting her and cooking for them. I always thought this thing really does work. I decided to search these types of sharpeners on Amazon and decided to go with the Grihot. I sharpened honed or polished every knife I have tonight with it. 12 Wusthof and 8 steak knives. These knives are all now razor sharp. I had to use extreme caution when assessing the blade. The major benefit to me is this sharpener can sit right next to my knife block and be used with great ease. I don't have to pull my electric sharpener out of the drawer and plug it in for one knife. I give this product my total endorsement. I just noticed this review may get published under my daughter's name. I am her father and the actual reviewer. Follow up. I am getting ready to purchase this product for my son. I have noticed many reviews not feeling like the product works the way they anticipated. I just sharpened all my knives this evening and once again they are razor sharp. So what's going on? If you let your knives get so dull you are going to have to work them back into shape which takes a little extra time and effort. This sharpener is more than capable of restoring knives. I fully anticipate having to spend a little extra time on my son's knives as I am not sure he has ever sharpened them. I have restored plenty of my children's knives with this product and will again. Just may take a little extra effort. Since purchasing this product I have never had to use my Chef's Choice electric sharpener.

I like this better than the F. Dick version. It looks nice, it’s heavy and stable and produces a quick and serviceable edge with a few strokes. This won’t replace a ceramic whetstone from Shapton, or a Tormek, but it does the job for everyday use for generic and German steel knives. It hones and sharpens (removes steel) and creates a serviceable toothy edge for everyday cooking. An indispensable tool in any kitchen that likes its knives sharp and doesn’t want to invest in a drawerful of mostly useless sharpeners!
