A bumpy beginning but wow, what a printer!
I first received the Elegoo Neptune 4 Max about 2 weeks ago. I had to print a part for a prototype that my almost 10 year old CR10 was not large enough for, so I ordered in the Max. Assembly was straightforward enough, no real issues there. My issues came with updating the firmware. I had watched reviews online and had seen many mentions of “the blob of death” where basically filament gets trapped inside of the extruder head and ruins it. This was caused by an earlier firmware that had some issues and this has since being rectified by newer firmware. I saw that my printer was still on the old firmware so I went to update. After attempting the update, the printer was stuck on the loading screen and would never boot up. I almost started the return process at this point as I was a bit frustrated, although, I’m glad I didn’t. I contacted Elegoo through Amazon to get support. They were very helpful and after a small bit of troubleshooting they had a new chip and screen, (both with the updated firmware) on the way to me. The updated parts made it to me in 1 week, not bad for shipping from the other side of the globe. I immediately set in on the install of the new chip. While no instructions were provided, it was a simple enough procedure. I laid this massive printer on its back so I could see all of the Allen screws on the bottom. I used a drill with an Allen bit on this part, it would definitely take quite some time with a regular Allen wrench. As I started removing the screws, I noticed there were two types, long and short. I simply put a small bit of masking tape next to each hole where to the short screws came out to ensure I put the correct screws in the correct spots upon reassembly. All screws removed, I pulled loose the cover and disconnected the fan attached to it. Then you can see the chip that needs replaced. Two Phillips screws hold it in place. Rock the chip gently and bring it out, pop in the new one, replace the screws, plug back in the fan and put all of those screws back in place. I then simply plugged in the new touchscreen. After that, I flipped the switch hoping it was successful. It was! After heating up and leveling the massive bed (please be sure to heat up the bed and let it cook for like 20-30 minutes before leveling) I loaded up my filament and started a print. I don’t know what you guys are using for printers now but let me say, going from my decade old CR10 to this Neptune 4 Max was like going from an econo car to a Ferrari! I was seriously blown away by the speed. The video I have attached is from its first run, a benchy. The quality is great, even printing at around 250mm/s. The huge removable print bed surface makes removing prints so easy! Putting it back in place is a bit daunting though as there is not any guides, you just eyeball it. I may print something that will act as a backstop to assist in laying it back down. A rough start with what ended up being a fantastic experience and I am truly enjoying this printer. The scale at which I can print now is amazing. The speed is amazing. It’s quiet for how big of fans it has. Leveling is easy. Also, great customer service!

I assume this is a good machine, if it ever worked
I tried for weeks to get this machine to work. I ordered the first machine, it came with defective eccentric nuts. So I requested a replacement, which came very quickly. The replacement ALSO came with defective eccentric nuts, as well as a damaged direct drive extruder. it would only extrude filament half the time. I made sure everything was set up properly and tuned well, and the machine still had trouble extruding filament. Unless Elegoo is willing to send me a second replacement that actually works, I'm going to suggest people go with another machine, or at the very least approach with caution.

Do yourself a favor and buy this printer
Ok, let me start by saying I own or have owned 8 various fdm printers, this is my first Elegoo, decided to give them a shot, and man-o-man, what a great decision by me that should have been made earlier! Prints great, no build adhesion issues, no stringing, no issues period. Magnetic build plate is great, moveable control panel is great, noise level is low, no fiddling with CURA settings required, get great prints with default. These aren't really cons, but I'll list a few things that were not ideal: Assembly requires a little time and effort, and the build plate is so big and heavy you will probably need a helper to turn it on its side to attach frame. Takes up a lot of space, so be ready for that. Still has the micro usb chip/card, just like every other FDM printer I have owned, why don't they just charge a few more bucks and use normal thumb drive like my resin printers. Lastly, though I have had no issues as of yet printing non-stop for a week, it appears that if this thing clogs there is going to be a tough time doing maintenance as everything is enclosed. And I am sure that eventually there will be a clog. At that time, I will update the review, and let you know how bad fixing it is. I should note, that I am printing small terrain pieces on this thing and the print quality is absolutely great, so it does well on small stuff, but the build plate is large enough to do huge stuff as well. I have noticed that you can get away with far less supports on this printer, not sure if that is due to the default CURA settings or the lack of vibrations, but I love it. So yeah, buy it. Update: When assembling, I thought the filament run out sensor was flimsy and was very skeptical. Tested the filament run out sensor last night, ran out in the middle of the night, reloaded in morning, absolutely no issues, can't even see a layer line where the new spool starts! Update 2: When printing lower layers of large items, the printhead cable sometimes drags across the build plate. The clip they provide is weak and not designed well. Haven't had a print damaged from this yet, but it definitely needs improvement, a retractable string loop at the top of the frame would work better.

masterpiece of a printer
I just started using it and it was easy to set up, level, and print. It's so quiet too. I used a gcode file for first print and it was a little slow, as it paused 4 seconds before each stepping up but surely you can speed it up and it comes with a Cura special for Elegoo printers that I haven't tried yet. Nice how the extruder is in the head. The instructions were very good but they could be better and larger. My experience with other printers helped me get past vagueness in instructions. Print quality is superior to any other of the many printers I have used. Very happy so far. I will be extremely happy if it has the stamina to get through 4 and 5 day prints regularly. Wonderful touch screen.
